I need a catchy short name for those kind of "crafting" videos that are all over tiktok and youTube where you see only the fun visually exciting steps of crafting making the process seem much easier than it is. It's one thing to make a crafting video knowing no one will really use it as a "how to" ... another to misrepresent the effort and techniques required to the results. No measuring, sanding, masking, glue is used for everything. Everything dries instantly and nothing ever goes wrong.

These videos also hypnotize me in a way that I kind of hate. My mind is screaming "this is nonsense" but the simple reward of seeing a craft step completed makes them harder to skip or turn off. I wonder if how common that effect is? I've seen them played in public places and there are always a few people just staring at the nonsense process...

@futurebird if they're howtos with no mistakes, what I call them in my head is "perfectionized howtos". I don't know if that's catchy, or if it matches what you're trying to describe.

@futurebird That is what I used to like about Craftsy, there was a little less of that nonsense. Still leaving out some stuff, but more educational than just made for consumption.

@pikesley @futurebird I don't know. I have watched a few channels worth of these as a relaxing time, and there's a sort of continuum between the ones that are just "here's me showing how I do some stuff", like repairing or restoring an old item (so much sanding of rust!) and the "bad" thing is only that they show no mistakes ever; and the others where "Here's an easy watercolor tutorial for beginners!" that shows an expert painting a flawless little piece and doesn't tell you how.

@pikesley @futurebird The MyMechanics guy on YT, for instance, is really relaxing to watch, and the thing is he never says or implies that *anybody can do it*. If anything, he perhaps fucks up in restoring too much of an object to the point that he's making a new one. But now I'm learning to paint and these "tutorials" are only good for inspiration.

@pikesley @futurebird Personally I want to wean myself off of Youtube Shorts in general, because they're saccharine. They're brief little empty moments that yield only a minuscule satisfaction and no more.

@adriano @pikesley Yeah whenever I accidentally run into such content (mostly from mistaking it for a "real" crafting video) I feel like a fly caught on fly paper. "I thought this would be informative, but it's just keeping me watching and wasting my time!"

@futurebird Opposite of what you’re looking for, Ali Spagnola is an artist that refers to her long videos as “pants”. Pants videos show the whole process of crafting and art; things often go wrong and creation is sometimes non-linear. (As opposed to YouTube“shorts” which skip the struggle to get to the finished product.)

@ojensen @futurebird It's having a real impact. A friend of mine has asked me many times to do a workshop for kids, or teach her how to make a chair out of wood. She always vastly underestimated the effort and time involved. Most ten-year-olds can't last two to three hours carving a wooden spoon.

@plsik @ojensen I see some of this with my students, though I don't know if I'd say it's getting worse because of the videos... but they can't help. Honoring the work and suffering of making things can be learned and it makes one more resilient.

@futurebird It should perhaps be noted that - at least in my view -the omission of mistakes and/or sleek production value isn't enough to qualify for "Crifting" (Ooh, I like this one!).To illustrate my point, I follow Minibricks on the YTs & she doesn't show mistakes & everything is so skillfully done & well-shot & edited - but it's still real & honest, you can actually see how the process works, learn & be inspired. It lacks the condescending "this is so easy" Pinterest vibe. IMO.

@futurebird craftporn is not a bad suggestion! The satisfaction of seeing something go from broken or raw material to fixed is mesmerising even if we know that in reality this is not easy.

@futurebird ... and most of these people never start crafting themselves, hynotised by these videos. In our cultural heritage centre, we sit on Sundays with embroidery or visible mending to get people interested. We are increasingly receiving perplexing comments such as: 'But that's real work! That's really hard!'When we then talk to people about how they can learn to do it, they tell us about such videos. They watched them, tried it, struggled and became frustrated. They gave up completely.

@beckermatic This is the best one yet. "craftbait"It's just fishing for your eyeballs using the vague language of making things... but teaches you nothing, helps to celebrate nothing (I find value in master artists showing some of their process even if I will never try it)The work is neither masterful (and therefore skipping the details can be excused) nor educational... it's just actions that trigger the reward center of the brain for having done something without you doing anything.

@futurebird Apologies if it was you who shared this and I'm just recommending it straight back to you, but I really enjoyed this "Will It Rat?" video (and am curious to see more) partly because it really grapples with the difficulties and setbacks involved in making the thing. (Also, I see that one of the previous materials featured did NOT rat - not even a little.) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=S0g0vnAGgJM
