I'm proud of my deft non-confrontational solution to the student I suspected of using AI for a bunch of club stuff (since it's not an "assignment" my options to use school policy were limited & I didn't want to make the kid feel singled out/exposed)"For all images on our material it's important to credit the artist or say if it's from a clip art library-- some students have worked hard to design logos, give them credit! All images should have a source!"Magically all the AI slop has vanished.

I mean we should do this anyway but it also forces anyone using AI to admit it-- and if you don't want to admit it? Hm. Well then.

@futurebird This. So much this.So many people never understand that addressing "tech issues" isn't a tech problem, it's a communication/classroom management/interpersonal skill.

@futurebird nicely done.in a different environment, (local government) we are negotiating an acceptable use policy for GenAI and similar. Ive asked to include a requirement to source or otherwise identify when these tools are used to create official material.getting A TON of resistance from the heaviest users.

@futurebird I hate to be a bummer here but credit won't do it: images and graphics, etc., need to be licensed--yes, even for non-profit or educational stuff (the fair use exception is more limited than most ppl think). If the source says "free" they are very likely stolen images, hurting the photographer/illustrator/designer who created the works. Regardless, even with credit, the use can be a copyright infringement.

@futurebird The AI makes people more dumb than helps them. Laziness would be a forbidden word in the coming years.

@futurebird Wait, why can't they just cite the AI model that created it?

@mwguy They can. They didn't want to do that and opted to make their own logos and art.

@LeslieBurns On a student poster at a in school fair? On an assembly slide? (also they opted not to use any art they didn't make themselves so this is moot)

@futurebird I know it sounds unfair, but yes. It's a risk. The educational fair use exception is for when the work itself is the subject of the lesson. For example, you can show the Annie Liebowitz photo of pregnant Demi Moore (cover of VF) when talking about the backlash AL got for making that photo. But you (probably) can't use it to show Demi Moore was a gutsy woman even then.

@futurebird id have singled the kid out anyway after the fact. Jiat to drive the message home that nobody wants that stuff, and if you cant be arsed to make your own stuff for an assignment or after-hours project. You should just take the door and leave.

@futurebird Good to know how well that worked. Once I said students didn't need to worry too much about the (formatting) style guidelines, and they took that to mean they could copy and paste paragraphs from any source as if they wrote that.
