I’ll summarize something my wife said the other day that’s been keeping my tossing and turning all night ever since she said it a few weeks ago:“the whole scene around my little pony friendship is magic, especially during the first year or two, was the closest thing we ever had to our own American Touhou culture. A relatively small scale specialty media product that became host to a gargantuan fan culture of people latching onto every single minor background character and world information and building entire universes, and especially notable because it wasn’t mostly limited to just fanart and fanfiction like with most fandoms, it inspired endless higher effort projects like comics, animations and fangames, the number of fan projects was incomparable to anything else except Touhou, but unlike the Japanese with Touhou we let our culture die because we were too worried about what outsiders thought was cringe. @jimmybuffettfanaccount Idk man. I think the fact that they’re ponies makes the sexual aspect of the fandom, which was definitely front and center during its height, pretty weird. Certainly offputting to US culture, which is already different from Japanese culture where anime was already well known making something like Touhou less surprising. Idk anything about Touhou though. All I can say is that the MLP thing looked weird to people on the outside and I mean that in the sort of Rick and Morty fans spazzing out in McDonalds kind of way.

@john_darksoul >definitely front and center at its heightThat would have been my perspective too not being a part of it myself, but I defer to her since she was in the thick of it and she remembers the sex stuff being largely cordoned off in its own world, basically the same as touhou hentai is separate from touhou sfw, and we don’t assume everyone who enjoys cirno looking at a meatball is blasting rope to cirno porn. frankly most things have porn drawn of it and aside from rare properties like overwatch the porn doesn’t define the whole fandom. I think we as outsiders just focused on the porn because it was the strangest aspect and easiest thing to make fun of.

@jimmybuffettfanaccount using Touhou is an excellent comparison. how many people actually care about Touhou because of the fairy-tale stories and the embracing of traditional creatures of myth? most people only care because haha fumo funny and will move on soon.i will disagree with her, however, on MLP being that for America. the actual equivalent for America is Sonic the Hedgehog, and I don't mean that as a joke. Sonic is a character who embodies the American values of freedom and the natural order, rebellion against authority if it means doing the right thing. He's spawned countless fangames, fancomics, and fan animations from the very beginning of the internet to this very day. Sonic is our Touhou, and like she said we are very insecure over the products of our culture (pro-wrestling is a close second).

@bleedingphoenix sonic hits a lot of the same points but if were including Japanese things that inspire such creativity in America we could also say the same for Pokemon, which almost certainly has as many rom hacks and fan games as sonic, and Mario and Zelda and a few different shonen series over the years and frankly even Touhou itself to an extent. I think it’s an important distinction that both the fandom and the property it’s based on are domestic.

@jimmybuffettfanaccount that is fair, though i would argue Sonic has a good domestic presence in the form of his comics, cartoons, and movies. his games might be foreign in origin but he's got a foothold here too.
