And of course, every ant is a perfect little angel so this works both ways.

@futurebird You are among a handful of stubbornly upbeat folks on the fedi who are keeping me sane with your gloriously unusual and thought-provoking takes on just about everything.Thank you for...well, being who you are. 🤷♂️

@vikxin "What ARE insect wings derived from, anyway?" Magnificent question! You have hit on one of the big mysteries of insect evolution. The OLD thinking is that some early hexapods evolved cape-like hoods as part of their exoskeletons these became very wide and maybe ... gliding? We don't have a really good transitional form! The new thinking is similar but maybe it came from the top segments of their front two legs.https://news.uchicago.edu/story/how-insect-wings-evolved-legs-ancestral-crustacean

@vikxin In the fossil record insect wings almost seem to pop into existence. But, this is understandable. The creatures with such "almost wings" were probably not very numerous and until someone unlocked the power of flight their numbers didn't explode. And insect fossils are rare as it is. So we have to use our imaginations. And genetic evidence as in the study described in the link to U. Chicago.

@futurebird now I wonder what biblically accurate ants look like...No, seriously, this is important! How am I supposed to imagine them crawling onto my picnic blanket signalling "be not afraid!" with their antennae if I don't know the answer to this question?
