Manufacturing offshored because taxes, regulations, and unions made domestic products too expensive. Making forign manufacturing also too expensive will not make anything cheaper or America more prosperous. You would need to actually roll back the red tape to get that to happen. High tariffs will make a few elites with rent-seeking capabilities more wealthy but do nothing for the working class broadly.

@nicholas @iwillbite in fact, our government used to be funded entirely by tarriffs before the federal reserve and IRS existed. this is one major aspect of policy that led to our economic prosperity that peaked around the 1960sthe other aspect, as you mention, is not taxing and regulating our domestic business out of existence. low government spending, low regulation, and a gradual shift from domestic taxation to tarriffs is exactly what's needed. notice that trump is also de-regulating and enabling domestic energy. our government has done much to incentivize and even FORCE businesses to offshore production. i completely support tarriffs and deregulation and phasing out the IRS entirely

Tariffs largely funded the federal government at a time when it did almost nothing. They never funded the state governments, which before the Civil War were doing most of the functions of state, and as soon as the income tax took effect, they became a negligible source of even federal funding. Additionally, a large reduction in tariffs immediately preceeded the 1950s and 60s, an era you cite as a period of notable domestic prosperity.It is incidentally mathematically impossible to fund 6 trillion in federal outlays from tariffs. A sort of reverse laugher curve takes effect where the higher the terrifs go, the fewer goods are imported, necessitating even higher terrifs to make up the shortfall, resulting in even fewer imports, etc...
