       I had to check this was real even though that little voice in my head was whispering “it’s real… this is 2025, of course this is real.”(It’s real. Launched last year.)Source: https://www.timesnownews.com/auto/ai-robot-deployed-to-prevent-potholes-in-uk-here-is-how-it-works-article-108484312 https://mastodon.me.uk/@pikesley/112110275539474776

       @aral Anything, absolutely ANYTHING to avoid dealing with people who might want things, or start a union, or expect credit for their hard work. I feel like it might be prudent to add a caveat that this "could be a good thing if its more efficient" but I have no faith in that being likely at this point.

       @aral I am the coach of my school's robotics team. Robotics is very hard. Non-trivial. It's an exciting field and can fill me with hope at times. But, is it really so bad to have two lads on a truck of asphalt with shovels?

       @futurebird But where’s the startup in that? Where’s the billion-dollar exit? How much water can those two lads drink even if they tried their best? AI can guzzle liters without batting an eyelid. Sorry, I just don’t see how your suggestion is feasible in the current climate.

       @Anke @aral "it doesn't seem horrible at first glance"You may be right, but lets glance a few dozen more times as I think this is how we keep on ending up in a handbasket wondering where we are going.

       @brunogirin @spacehobo @aral Anyone who wants to drive one is probably not who you want to trust driving one. There will be paths and pavers all over the place.

       @spacehobo @futurebird That’s gorgeous. A perfect example of optimal automation (https://ar.al/2024/10/16/optimal-automation/).#optimalAutomation

       @aral @spacehobo So much better for the workers backs. And they are doing the part of the task people are best at and able to monitor the progress.

       @spacehobo @aral @futurebird That's interesting. In Pittsburgh we have a lot of 'Belgian Brick' streets (and a lot of cycling, despite the nightmare hills, look up Canton Avenue) they are all preserved and have a very distinctive ride and surface.

       @futurebird @spacehobo @aral probably. I'd still love to rip up all the tarmac in small streets around here and drive one of those around with experienced pavers and a stock of paving stones to make fancy patterns. It's like pixel art for the road.

       @brunogirin @futurebird @spacehobo @aral And then I have to bike on it. It may look neat but it's hell on us cyclists. Is there a halfway?

       @InkySchwartz @brunogirin @spacehobo @aral Beach bike with knobby tires?Really there can be a smooth bike lane separated from the paved street. (and from the sidewalk!)This is the correct way.

       @InkySchwartz @futurebird @brunogirin @spacehobo @aral In principle you’d be able to integrate a raised into the printed road’s “fabric.” This is a fascinating machine. I need to read up on it.

       @futurebird @aral Without "well actually"-ing too hard, this is to detect pre-hole cracks, and give 'em a squizzle of tar. Preventative maintenance is great, but it's also hard and IO bet the false detection rate will be so high that the robot will end up logging jobs for the lads with shovels.

       @futurebird one thing about pavers, it's relatively easy to install thongs under them. They dragged fiberoptic lines in our street a couple years ago. Took a day with two guys and a tiny digger. Pick the bricks up, stack them to the side.Dig down 50-100cm.Unspool cable.Put the dirt and bricks back. With asphalt? Ugh. @aral
