To deflate the money supply would crash the economy so hard that there would be an insurrection.

@TrevorGoodchild The conventional view of that is that the tax cuts acted as a Keynesian stimulus, counteracting the high interest drag, thus a booming economy by 1983 despite what would be seen as outrageous rates today. Also the feds didn't owe $33 trillion in 1981...

@judgedread @TrevorGoodchild iirc around ‘82/‘83 boomers in big numbers started getting into the stock market, which had been stagnant for like 15 years. Today the market’s been super inflated by decades of QE/Fed back door manipulation

@TrevorGoodchild @judgedread > -The market can stay irrational longer than you can stay liquid> -Being 'right' too early is indistinguishable from being completely wrongBoth of those statements are dependent on you playing with money you can't afford to lose. If you can afford to lose the money your investment timeline essentially becomes unlimited and you can wait out the market.Of course sometimes the market is right and you're wrong, in which case you have to eat your loss (yes, I've had a handful of investments go to zero).Playing with margin is a quick path to bankruptcy unless you know what you're doing. Sometimes, even if you do (see: Long-Term Capital Management).

@James_Dixon @TrevorGoodchild @judgedread I bought one stock that essentially went to zero, or at least lost 90% of its price. It's a company that recycles soda bottles into plastic decking. It seemed a slam dunk -- wood decking is a pain to maintain, their raw material is essentially free etc. But nope ... That said, when a stock loses that much value, its still in my portfolio because why sell? I can wait another 20 years.

@JohnYoungE @TrevorGoodchild @judgedread > I bought one stock that essentially went to zero, or at least lost 90% of its price. In my case they actually went to zero. The companies went out of business and the stock was deemed worthless. That's only a small percentage of the stocks I've owned over the years though. It's been far more common for a company I own stock in to get bought out.

@TrevorGoodchild @judgedread There's no deflating. As an American finbro told me "debt is boring". They'll just take the crash whenever it happens. It could be a decade ir two from now and that's a long time in fin terms. Then again it could be right around the corner. In any case this is the immediate future...

@VikingWays @TrevorGoodchild @judgedread I had dinner with one of the men that presided over a Trump bankruptcy many years ago. I don't recall the entire story he told, but he said that Trump basically walked into that meeting and said "You need me more than I need you, so this is how we are going to do this."Which to the old adage - if you owe the bank $10,000 it's your problem, if you owe the bank $1,000,000 it's the bank's problem. Everyone has a problem right now, and I suspect we are in unprecedented times regarding financial shenanigans with a reserve currency. But maybe not.
