Interesting look at the shortcomings of the disinformation expert industry. I assume the partisan leanings of typical Mastodon users will render them hostile to this article, but maybe not. I dare you to surprise me, punks. https://www.politico.eu/article/nobody-tricked-vote-donald-trump-disinformation-panic-over/

@kevinrothrock It’s interesting logic - because latest Trump support was genuine, DNC nor Cambridge Analytica didn’t happen 🤔

@kevinrothrock Some of the criticism is certainly valid - where they say that it doesn’t make sense for platforms to counter misinformation when the top political leaders are spreading it in the first place. The same goes for the conclusions - that people believe in bullshit because emotions and trust in a “personal charm” are are “a human thing”, but it’s also deeply nihilist. Why would you ever run Meduza in Russian if most Russians will still believe Putin saying the wildest bullshit in the world?

@kevinrothrockUhh, strange article. So, the field - as a research area - is struggling (and cannot even agree on basic definition, but at the end it acknowledges that podcasters and similar get people to believe bullshit because they have authority through charisma. The last sentence seems to be a good summary. "“This idea that you give people the best talking points, and you’re the master of the facts,” Peck said. “We need to think beyond that.”"So, the internet spreads lies, but you can't fight them with facts alone.

@kevinrothrockThis is basically what I see in The Real World™️, too.Telling someone, "You are wrong, let me show you the facts" is a waste of time.If I however take the time to discuss the topic, listen, and explain, while being sympathetic for their underlying reasons, I can slowly convince them of the truth.
