I have broken my windows in a unique way: I'm using a high-DPI display, but my menu size and some other metrics are set wrong. This happened for reasons. But since Windows 10 removed the Appearances control panel, you can't fix it. what if I use a ported Windows 8 appearances control panel? THAT'S HOW I BROKE IT IN THE FIRST PLACE

my current plan is "boot windows 10 on a VM and then export some windows metrics from the registry and then import those back onto the computer and hope that fixes it"

@foone Can you use process explorer on another VM running 8 to see what files/reg keys it edits?

this all happened because I crashed a windows 95 game and it turns out the game tweaks some of the windows appearance values while it's running. it puts them back when you quit. so if you crash, it fucks your windows theme. and in windows 10 you can't change your appearance anymore!

so I downloaded a way to use the old apperances panel and it turns out they didn't update it for high-DPI displays so it sets everything to FUCKING TINY in a way you cannot fix without resetting your registry settings

@foone Might need one of those screen magnifiers for such occasionshttps://www.robertnguyen.net/blog/2021/3/18/tiny-screens-and-giant-magnifying-glasses

@foone Cribbing settings from the default user registry hive (faster than creating a sacrificial user profile) might be another option next time. It's confusing because it's not the hive loaded under HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT (the user profile of the SYSTEM account), although that might have worked in this case as well.https://devblogs.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/20070302-00/?p=27783

@foone ohh, I have memories of games crashing on 95 and 98 and at very least having to reboot to fix one of several potential bizarre display issues caused by exactly this.

@foone Copy rundll32.exe from SysWOW64 to the same directory as deskn.cpl, then run it like this:set __COMPAT_LAYER=HIGHDPIAWAREstart "" "%~dp0rundll32.exe" shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "%~dp0deskn.cpl"This will let you set window metrics properly (I use it to tweak the titlebars and scrollbars in Win11, because I want both thinner).

@foone This happened to me once with the original preSteam release of Half Life. The old Day 1 release. From what I understood I got off lucky in that I was able to fix it without rebuilding my Windows install. Some of the crash results of 1.0 weren't so easy to recover from. Fun days, right? XD

@foone I stopped working around Microsoft issues ca. 1996. I am much happier since.
