Republicans are so very busy putting blame on everyone regarding the inferno in California while like always totally ignoring the main causeWe are kinda all to blame here for the carelessness we act upon our home planetThe difference is if we acknowledge it and finally start dealing with it otherwise it will only get worse in the future

@stux unfortunately the United States can no longer lead. It is up to the rest of the world now to go on without the US on issues like the environment, science, tech, etc.

Maybe it's a republican thing 🤔 "Finding the person responsible is the exact same thing as fixing the issue"Apply-able on almost everything, how handy! Well no, it's not

@stux Sigh. I can't begin to imagine what the chatter is like today on x and "truth social." It would probably break my brain. So glad to have this platform! :blobcatblep:

@stux They don't even need to find the culprit. A scapegoat will do, and they can pretend they solved a problem.

@emaechler @stux Hi, native Californian here. We had a severe drought this year actually, so wild fires were bound to get out of control

@pb4000 @emaechler Does the droughts get worse and more frequent the past decades?

@stux @emaechler After looking at some data, I stand corrected on the severe drought. The main misconception I encounter a lot is that people don’t know that Southern California is actually a desert, so my knee jerk reaction is usually to emphasize that. Sorry about that!As seen in the link below, while 2024 had good rainfall, recent decades have shown a decline in average rainfall overall, particularly in downtown LA where the data is from. Recent decades have in fact seen more droughts more often, so the answer to your question is yes. Additionally, the other key factor is the Santa Ana winds that kick up every year. They’re strong, dry winds normally, but the gusts and speeds this year are unheard of. These two things combined are definitely painting a scary picture of the future. https://www.laalmanac.com/weather/we13.php
