If no one ever called anyone "the father of *" where * is some area of study or field ever again... I would be so happy. It always gives me the creeps when people use that turn of phrase. Just say "a founding figure in *" or "a leader in laying the foundations of *" or really anything else.Heck, why not call them "the most successful alate of *" ?

@futurebird Most of the time there’s also someone in history who thought of it before

@angelastella @ShiitakeToast It's not just the erasure of complexity that bugs me. It's making people into "dads" all over the place. It's creepy. Stop it.

@futurebird @angelastella 😂 “he’s the daddy of the field of...” or worse, “he is best known for having sired the study of...”

How about a compromise? People can keep call guys "the father of bivalves" or whatever HOWEVER you have to say "the dad of bivalves" Just change it to "dad" in every case. The people who want everything to have a "father" get to do what they want and the rest of us get to giggle.

@futurebird the quality of fatherhood in this era was particularly awful and in many cases justifiably criminal today. Not all men, but in many cases so many that the good ones who did NOT teach bigotry, violence, and the submission of women, those who did NOT were a minority that was often subject to abuse themselves.

@futurebird I vote for 'pops' and it must always be said with a southern drawl. As in 'Socrates, he right there is the pops of philosophy'.

Trying to make everything have a dad reminds me of how people also like to put faces on everything. Like those children books where every object has a face.

@hipsterelectron @futurebird (slight tangent: i know it's not a good sign when a sentence starts with something like, "i know the u.s. isn't north korea, buuuuuuuut..." ...to my ears, "founding father" somehow sounds at least as creepy as "dear leader". Like... it somehow goes beyond *merely* presuming reverence for someone who was objectively terrible on several axes.)

@JamesWidman @hipsterelectron Totally. It's bizarre and deeply antique, and then bizarre again how people don't seem to notice that it's bizarre.

@futurebird It’s strange how the diminutive “dad” sounds funny to us or is used pejoratively (“dad jokes”, “dad bod”, etc). Because I am not my stepkids’ father, but I am their dad. And I own that proudly, along with my dad bod and dad jokes.

@catselbow Sometimes a dad is just a dad. (autocorrect kept trying to make me type “sometimes a dad id just a dad” don’t know *what* to make of that.)

@futurebird “Father” is biology, “dad” is emotional investment and responsibility. Plenty of examples of one without the other (both ways).

@futurebird i'm going to start using "the sire of..." or "the dam of..." just to make everyone around me (even more) uncomfortable.
