I wonder why ants and only a few wasps have scapes? What is the advantage of scapes and why does it have to do with being an ant?

@futurebird google sucks at showing me what that is but it's when the antenna has an elbow? maybe it's for following those ant chemical trails better

@futurebird I'm given to understand that some types of goats have scapes as well, but admittedly I've never seen one in person.

silly me thinking everyone thinks about scapes all of the time. This must be someone's fault... not mine. If only I could blame some hapless farm animal for this happening.

@futurebird I always thought it was because scapes allow an insect to antennate whatever they are holding in their mandibles, which is why scapes are common in social insects.

@futurebird I thought the first segment of any arthropod antenna was always called the scape, but ants were unusual in having a rather long scape?(I probably learned this from wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insect_morphology#Antennae )
