AI ought to stand for “Attribution Imperative” because the increased importance of attribution is the most immediate need I see in response to AI. There was a time when studying a macrophoto of an insect didn’t require you to know if it was real or not. If a diagram of the water cycle looked like it came from a textbook it was probably “fine”— those days are over. Further attribution helps creators in a time where their work is being mined and replaced.

Imagine medical students pondering fake photos of the inside of the human body—A stewardess glances over fake emergency door opening procedures before working on a new plane. A chef looks a fake “safe mushrooms” before making you dinner. Your child looks a fake animals that don’t exist and wonders why the real baby peacocks are so “ugly.”A young engineer looks at fake electron microscopy of dangerous abrasive marks on a bridge join. Your lawyer reads fake cases to support his work.

@futurebird >> A chef looks a fake “safe mushrooms” before making you dinner. >> Your lawyer reads fake cases to support his work. These have both already happened to people. It's not great.

@futurebird Perhaps pictures and references without attribution should be automatically discounted.

@futurebird we have to train on expensive simulation doors that are essentially the door minus the rest of the plane idk how many like transportation regulations would have to be undone to put like a fake picture in our manual and have it go through all the levels of approval and our union's health and safety committee who would rightfully lose their shit. If the company introduces a new aircraft type we all have to retrain and our mere presence on the plane is mandated by law. I understand your point but I really feel I have a much more AI-proof job than a lot of white collar ones. Sorry for being annoying.

@futurebird agreed. I was thinking similar the other day in respect to Mastodon posts. Putting your links at the bottom of your toot in a reply is fine, but maybe we should think about formalizing the cite your sources part.https://fosstodon.org/@chris_hayes/113806485576844872

@futurebird Absolutely agree - a project I need to get back to working on and get to a github-able state: tokens ('idens') which can be used indefinitely as a proof of continuity/identity publicly everywhere - so the individual may be human or not, but we know any any context that what is published is definitely by them.I need to start re-reading my code and figure out how complete where I left off is.#p2p #distributed #identity #python

@nebula @futurebird There was a case here in Minnesota where an expert witness testifying about disinformation got caught committing perjury by using text generator output.

@red_r0sez @futurebird My spouse works on a team that creates the online training materials for flight crews on one of the majors. The amount of review and re-review those materials get is extensive. (And those materials are definitely understood to be for basic familiarization and not demonstrating competence.)
