IDK if it's sacrilege but these little electronic players that play Buddhist chants are like magic for daily cleaning. Get home and put on the chants and clean for a time. The chants sort of stretch and compress time: make the whole process more pleasant. It's basically a small MP3 player, with a few "popular" chants preloaded. There are similar devices that play the Bible but I don't see that making me meditative and gently focused on doing mundane tasks well.

Yes you could just play it on your phone. But that's more fussy and somehow less enjoyable.

The book sealed inside of it is called "Buddhist Surmounting Obstacles Incantations" according to my husband.

@futurebird Buddhists will teach that before you understand, you are a common person, doing menial things. Then, once you have learned all that buddhism can teach you, you will be a common person, doing menial things.Certainly, house cleaning fits that theme.

@justafrog The person who gave it to me is Buddhist, they said it would help with the pain I had when my leg was broken... and it did a little.

@futurebird I remember the early, "Buddha box" and when you disassembled it, there was a tiny plastic buddha inside.

@magicalthinking It's going to drive me nuts wondering if there is a real book in there ... it's in the style of a kind of necklace that normally has a book sealed inside.

@futurebird the only sacrilege I can imagine is if you're not dancing delightedly while you're working

@futurebird I remember because when the ipod came out some microsoft engineers took it apart and discovered a tiny speaker inside."We could never do something like this..." was their reaction. It doesn't play the music, just the clickwheel sound.

@futurebird @magicalthinking If you are interested in an academic study of how and why there is a text in that amulet...I wrote one. Scroll down <https://tending.to/garden/doku.php?id=key_publications> until you get to _Writing and the Origins of the Mahayana. And yes, zoning out to the sound of a sutra whilst cleaning is a fine thing to do. Understanding ordinary activities such as 'cleaning' as part of a profound commitment to help all sentient beings (including ants) is a Very Good Activity. .||.

A week later and this is still going great!I feel like I've discovered a hack to put my brain in cleaning mode. I do a little each day and it's starting to look ... nice? around here? There is ... space? on the bookshelves? The books are neat and they don't stuff the shelves (the secret to making bookshelves look good. Waste space. But it also makes it easier to use.)It's a good thing I have like a billion bookends. There are also a billion books.

This method of cleaning *keeps* working. Listen I *mopped the floor* that's crazy people stuff. It was very relaxing getting the water dirty over and over and pouring it away. This is too powerful. I used to set a timer and clean for 20 min but I hated that. With this I don't want to really stop until the task is done. So it could be 10min or 40...It's getting kinda minimalist around here which is very impressive for a book hoarder with pet ants.

@futurebird what I usually do in a bit more mundane fashion is I put on my headphones and listen to podcasts or an audiobook while I do my evening cleaning/household chores (laundry, folding, emptying/loading dishwashers, handwashing, making meal prep for breakfast/my son’s lunch etc. my wife goes to sleep a few hours before me ask I usually get about 30-45 mins of podcasts or audiobooks + a clean kitchen/folded laundry. Or as tonight I washed up while making dinner (waiting for water to boil)

@futurebird This is what I use the Lo-Fi Girl channel for. Puts me in a meditative focus.
