Too bad the fact that puff pieces like this have been running for eVTOLs for the last decade is totally lost on Breitbart.https://www.breitbart.com/news/flying-taxis-are-on-the-horizon-as-aviation-soars-into-a-new-frontier/

The fucked up part is that motor and controller tech is absolutely there, but battery tech is nowhere close for something like this to be practical. It also does not help that there has not been any market need for this application ever. They tried it in the late 60s with Bell JetRangers and such and was unsustainable.

@CliffSecord @mothersmurfer You have to wonder if this whole thing, including the media coverage, is just another advanced form of money laundering.Like you said, it's going to be a long time before they figure out how to beat the energy density of kerosene.

It has to be, because look at Lilium. After burning through over one billion Euro of private investor funds over ten years and only one unmanned prototype capable of only brief hops to show for it, they went bankrupt last fall. Then, out of thin air, another investor comes in with a EUR200 million cash injection. Who in their right mind would knowingly invest in a lost cause like that?Mind you, among the many 'investors' in this snake oil scheme are all numerous airlines, Goldman Sachs, Blackrock and the rest of the jewish all-stars of finance. Given that information, yeah, its a laundering scheme that only a kike can devise. The closest battery tech out there that could make electric flight practical is flouride-ion. Prototype systems have shown tremendous promise in testing, as the chemistry retains over 15x more energy per unit density than what lithium-ion can do and is durable, safer and non-toxic, among many things, but several materials engineering hurdles, such as internal corrosion, must be cleared before it comes to market. There is urgency, as lithium is a rare earth metal sourced mostly from Asia and Africa, and the US has thousands of years worth of flouride within its own borders. We've seen what Chevron is doing with their Fl-Ion engineering, and it is damn impressive. They had a prototype system in a Chevy Spark EV go more than 1,200 miles on a single charge! For a system to be practical in a 200-250 hp light aircraft (4-seater), you need to be able to taxi, takeoff, climb to cruise, cruise for 2 hours, descend, approach, go missed, fly to the alternate and loiter for 30 minutes and land. Charging must take place within a 4 hour window, weigh under 350 pounds and occupy the limited volume of the wing cavities.

@CliffSecord @CoQ_10 @mothersmurfer I wasn’t aware the Chevy Spark used Fl-Ion. This is interesting. I wonder if that’s what they used in the early-1900s batteries 🧐

@CliffSecord @mothersmurfer I was quite surprised to learn that fluorine is over three times more abundant in the earth's crust than chlorine. Don't know if they include sea water in those calculations, almost certainly not.

It doesn't. This was a test fleet of five cars with five Fl-Ion prototype arrays in them. Engineering development vehicles.I believe the first batteries way back when were flouride based; nowhere close to what is being engineered nowadays.

@CliffSecord @CoQ_10 @mothersmurfer Gotcha; I remember a similar thing back in the ‘90s when Chevy recalled 3000 or 5000 or whatever number of EVs for no other discernible reason other than that they were decent (of course some rubberstamped “safety concern” was the official line, iirc).

The EV1 was impressive for its time. But the state of the art at the time simply was not conducive to making the car economically viable. It still isn't. Tesla or Rivian would not exist but for the massive government subsidies they get, same for any EV that mainstream OEM's produce. The fact that those subsidies are slowly drying up explains why GM, Ford, Dodge et al rolled back their EV programs. It also does not help that real demand for these things do not exist.Who honestly wants to buy a car that is pretty much restricted to local in/around town only...and is liable to catch fire at any moment?

I have no issue with that! We managed to score an unused YASA 750R axial flux motor and Cascadia Motion CM200DX-SP invertor-controller at an estate sale some months ago for just $500. It pumps out 270hp and would be ideal for a direct drive application to a prop!

Everything has a price and for me usable local transportation with batteries is under 15k. Good score on the motors.

@CliffSecord @CoQ_10 @mothersmurfer Oh noes, we can't make fluoride batteries! If they start making those we won't have enough fluoride to dump into municipal water systems!
