We must stop fossil fuels. 🔥 Deadly #wildfires in winter! This is what #ClimateChange looks like. Five people dead and over two thousand buildings burned in out of control fires ravaging Los Angeles. https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/01/the-role-of-climate-change-in-the-catastrophic-2025-los-angeles-fires/1/6

Very wet conditions in early 2024 promoted vegetation growth. But this was followed by record heat in the summer of 2024 in #California. The dry conditions prevailed through the autumn with dry vegetation persisting.2/6

The dry conditions occurred in combination with a severe Santa Ana Wind event with many stations in Los Angeles recording 70 mph (112 km/hr) winds. 3/6

Climate change contributed to this event due to the flip flop between very wet and very dry conditions and record high temperatures over summer resulting in thick dry vegetation cover providing lots of fuel to burn, as well as by increasing the length of the dry season. 4/6

Climate scientists have predicted decades ago that extreme events will become more frequent and more intense with climate change and we are now seeing it play out for real. We were all deceived by fossil lies that downplayed how deadly this is.5/6

We must stabilize Earth's temperatures by cutting back drastically on our dependence on fossil fuels and restoring the natural carbon sinks. These fires are just a warning sign of worse to come.6/6

@ScientistRebellion If only CA knew there would be high winds and dry conditions, maybe something could have been done to prevent it?

@magicalthinking Prevention can help but has its limitations. When government is actually cutting the fire department budget, you can imagine they will also not care about prevention.
