@judgedread True. Similar to how a programming is not computer science. But programmers like to LARP as computer scientists and saw themselves as irreplaceable whereas much of the real work was very rote and repetitive and completely replaceable by machine. So it goes.

What is there to prevent the scenario of "Cotton Mather with an inescapable airtight panopticon" other than a HOPE that Cotton Mather will decide to play nice? These are precisely the types who are likely to be interested in the technology, just like sadists tend to become prison guards. Panopticon potential seems likely to attract panopticon aficionados. HOPING that the people who control the ability to monitor all of humanity in a nightmarish tyranny are perfect beautiful angels with totally benevolent intent who won't use that potential power out of the sheer purity of their hearts seems more than a little like a pleasant fantasy rather than a sober analysis, sorry.
