@WiseWoman @kim_harding We used to include the sentence "All applications to include a handwritten covering letter" in our employment advertising. Usually 50% of applications had a word processed printed letter. And they wondered why they were never called for an interview.

@tinfoiling @WiseWoman @kim_harding why is the letter being handwritten so important? Are you employing stenographers?

@WiseWoman I think preparedness as a trait is mostly owed to experiences of genuine hardship over having not been prepared enough. Usually once a student sees the possibility of complete failure over it they adapt (assuming they have the opportunity and the wherewithal to think about it in those terms), but if they didn't get that experience they won't value it and won't aspire to it. If you wanted to impose such an experience on them, you might refuse them at the door for not being prepared, although that would likely feel arbitrary if you started doing it in the middle of a term and they may not take the intended lesson properly. My advice would be to make a sharp change in policy starting day one of the next term.

@Nudhul @WiseWoman there comes a point at which you do need to "cut the cord" as it were, and I think that point is well before embarking on a master's level educational track. An important aspect of it is to not act personally disappointed, just dispassionately tell them if they aren't prepared they shouldn't be there (in that session of class, that is).
