So, for reasons I can't fully justify I follow a lot of rather "young" horror content. I just love a good spoopy story I guess. But, I also like to get a sense of what "kids these days" think is scary. Most of it is what you'd think: blood and guts, shadow people, etc. HOWEVER a big component of modern horror is "threats to mental health" this is how they put it in the stories "staying in this place will destroy your mental health." or "it's so empty and eerie you'll loose mental health"

The horror in, this case, isn't as much about a "raving madman" (and found in much older horror, often with little sensitivity for anyone whose struggles might be conflated with the character.)No, this is about the fear of having a mental health crisis, as is becoming too depressed to go on.IDK I find it interesting.

@futurebird this seems like the less problematic version of being driven to madness by things man was not meant to know

What I found scary at their age was "but who was phone???"

@futurebird no doubt rooted in cosmic horror!

@futurebird I don't read horror per se but that's also a theme I've found fascinating. There's a whole subset of anime that focuses there, that I watched as a teen, so it'll be dated now but they handled some topics impressively well. NGE set a high bar early on.

@futurebird Maybe the ending where someone "goes mad" from experiencing the impossible scary thing in the old Lovecraft and Edmond Hamilton type stories was really the same fear, enhanced by the extreme social stigma associated with mental illness at the time--if you had a visible mental health crisis you might just end up locked away in an attic and not allowed to show your face in public any more; end of story.

@futurebirdReminds me of the Metallica lyric: "Old habits reappear, fighting the fear of fear". Never seen anything else that so succinctly sums up the feeling of having had mental health issues and losing the ability to take functional mental health for granted from that point on.Smart kids.

@futurebird and a skeleton popped out! But seriously, I completely understand the mental health crisis horror. And it's not really new, is it? The Yellow Wallpaper comes to mind.

@futurebird is this just a modern re-wording of the old, old horror trope of "things which drive the mind to madness"?

@futurebird my apologies for not reading the whole thread before asking about exactly this.
