Search for “Google Slides” & you may see that the first image they select for one of their flagship office softwares is... Someone’s SEO-cash-grab “custom product” spam. Plastic slippers with the Google slides icon on them? Google’s own intellectual property is being parasitized here. What chance do independent artists stand? Many search engines could simplify their interface by dropping the “shopping” tab, as that is now the main search.I can’t use google to find basic information on a google product without being spammed in the most asinine way. Would I like some plastic slippers with “google slides” on them? oh! Some one might! There are millions of people, our data show this search is popular but rarely converted to product sales. Let’s irritate all of those people to make a little money. This is ludicrous.

Am I out of line for thinking this makes Google look very bad? As in “sell that stock they don’t know what they are doing” bad? This isn’t just me being a scruffy anti-capitalist hippie… this is just a bad look. For a company that is the front door to the web for millions to have so little consistency— for the SEO garbage to be lapping at their own projects. It’s tawdry, broken and depressing.

@futurebird The key thing is that they have a near monopoly on what they do and their biggest competitors basically do the same stuff.Basically it's the whole enshittification thing. General public apathy across the board has allowed all the major options to enshittify more and more and for the average person who is too apathetic to be bothered to look up alternate options (or even be bothered to switch anyway) just keeps using them even as they become more and more useless.

@futurebird this is bad, it's making the product terrible.But it's probably not "sell your stock" bad, as search isn't the product you have stock in. It's whatever makes money. Long term it's going to be a problem but not right now.

@futurebird I have thought for a while now that we are witnessing the end of the internet as a useful tool for anything. It's only real function now is for communication by closed, invitation only, special interest groups, families, or organizations. Literally nothing else is trustworthy now. Ads are scams, articles are fake and wrong, search will not show you what you need, just what they're trying to push. It's useless.

@futurebird I can only reproduce this by searching for "Slides." Searching for "Google Slides" does not show flip flops in the knowledge panel anymore. I wouldn't be surprised if they fixed this as soon as it appeared on social media. Google does quickly respond when bad queries start to become public knowledge.
