*at the grocery store*"I remember when this place wasn't so gentrified""mmm hmm""Look at this!" She shakes her head sadly "they sliced the peppers for you. Cut them up. Onions too. This is whole foods ****""Dean and Deluca""Yeah."*The women criticizing the pre-cut vegetables put them in their cart*I, who had been eaves dropping scuttled not far behind to grab one for myself.

Fancy is relative. "Dean and Deluca" only recently started carrying black garlic ... which has been at every Bronx Bogopa and Western Beef for as long as I can remember. Do you think I could buy it in the Bronx for $4 and bring it to midtown to sell for $20? I have no idea whats going on with the prices.

@grumpasaurus I would need to put it in one of those darling little jars. Ours comes in a plastic tub.

@myrmepropagandist It never would have occurred to me that pre-cut vegetables would be a symptom of gentrification.

@dynamic I'm stunned to see them. Happy, because I'm very lazy, but stunned.

@dynamic The value add on just slicing things is absurd. I do feel guilty about using them, but more because of the extra plastic packaging than the price. Although the price is also a little unpleasant.

@futurebird @dynamic I prefer to buy my fruit and veges whole and unpeeled, but only because I keep reading horror stories about various diseases being food-borne (salmonella, listeria, norovirus, ech).

@futurebird @dynamic I had been buying pre-sliced stuff for a time but now I’m back to not. It may be that we’re also more rural now and don’t have much that’s pre-cut except one veggie tray option and one fruit tray option, lol. But I also find I have less waste this way.

@futurebird they're great for me, because even cooking a simple meal is a huge physical effort, so anything I can do to streamline is a benefit. Frozen vegetables are also excellent because they are sliced already, and you can just use what you want, and save the rest, reducing waste.

@futurebird @dynamic I buy pre chopped butternut squash and also pre chopped onions. It's partially for convenience and partially for safety. Sometimes I'm just feeling clumsy and just don't want to use a peeler or a sharp knife while hanging onto a slippery vegetable.

@futurebird Did you know that the Fairway in Red Hook went out of business a couple of years ago and was replaced with a Bogopa? What’s the opposite of gentrification? Maybe serfification?
