People greatly underestimate how active the farming industry has to be all year round to keep up with demand from many clients, and how few days we have before all the fresh food runs out of the grocery stores, apart from being constantly restocked by agricultural and logistics firms throughout the whole world. It would take a couple of weeks, depending on any looting, before the processed and preserved foods go as well. It takes more than a year just to establish a self-sustaining farm on half-an-acre and to harvest food for at most four to six people, already presuming you have the land and equipment.

There might not be quite as many things to know as there is for something like machining or foundry work.I'd say the knowledge required for farming is about the same as plumbing, electrician, or HVAC. It still takes at least a year of training to get usable results.That is ignoring the fact that being a good farmer generally requires a good working knowledge of almost every other skilled trade out there.

That's ignoring the racial demographic issues, but I suppose you could if people were allowed to self-segregate en masse, but then issues of the sheer amount of people and the land pollution from that in farming (you won't be able to sustain the current population without modern fertilizers which are a major problem of pollution in the landscape, so that's another issue to contend with in the future: population implosion, more famine, population movements, etc).This doesn't even get into the fact that in the USA most farms and farmers are owned/contracted by megacorps that own all the food production from the ground/chicken coop/etc. to the way the processed food is presented in the grocery store, and then some.
