@bruce Trophallaxis is often described as how ants share food, like a mother bird feeding her babies, but ants do it so often that it's clear it has other functions. Trophallaxis seems to play a role in how the colony asses what it needs. Is there enough sugar? Do we need more protein? If you know what's in your sister's tummies this is an easier question to answer with accuracy.

@bruce Trophallaxis is a form of communication, not just a way to share resources. It forms part of the wider awareness of their surroundings shared by ants. The ant you meet on the sidewalk may not have been *told* that her sisters in the rock garden killed a millipede and now the colony has plenty of protein... but through a chain of trophallaxis spanning half a dozen sisters she is still aware. And that is why she wants your bubblegum. Because sugar is now the priority. Efficiency!

@bruce Listen, ya'll can think trophallaxis is gross if you want, but have you ever considered how humans fed babies before we invented pre-crushed baby foods in cute little jars? As a baby weaned from milk, their parents would chew their food for them. Some anthropologists have mused this is why kissing is an intimate gesture shared in every single human culture. I don't know if that's true but I can't think of a better explanation for kissing, which is also gross if you think about it.

@bruce Also, were you not a mammal you'd think milk was VERY gross. Horrific really. The problem of sharing nutrition and energy in cooperative organisms is nontrivial. The success of mammals is, in part, due to this ability. Like ants we have a way of ensuring that our young have perfect nutrition for their earliest development.
