Since Phil has done the equivalent of throwing a drink in my face and running away (ie reply with evidently false nonsense and Block), see the screenshot for his claim, or this link;https://mastodon.philtanner.com/@Phil_Tanner/113768044580935840What he said was;> my boy did decide to go celebrate New Year in Wellington, and as a 19y/o male, obviously feels invulnerable and susceptible to peer pressure, so doesn't mask up?https://mastodon.philtanner.com/@Phil_Tanner/113767447374206657My reply, which he characterises as a false accusation;https://mastodon.philtanner.com/@strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz/113767544769582855

I'll leave it to the reader to decide if my comment was unjustified, and whether Phil was in the right to throw his toys out of the cot in response. But I think it's worth noting that this is the level of debate the mask police are typically capable of. I'm starting to think that an obsession with making everyone wear masks all the time is actually a symptom of mental illness.

To be clear, I don't begrudge anyone Muting me if I'm inadvertently bothering them. Whether temporarily, or permanently. But going straight to the nuclear option of a Block? Over such a mild disagreement, when we've had heaps of perfectly friendly and constructive interactions in the past? I don't know, it just seems like cutting off your nose to spite your face.TBH I find Block quite pointless. As I just demonstrated, it doesn't stop the Blocked person accessing your public posts.

@strypey if you're looking for outside feedback: your overall replies there seem somewhat reply-guy-like, and definitely seem to me like something that would tweak folks who think people aren't taking COVID seriously enough. If you're not looking for feedback, sorry, carry on.

@tim thanks for the feedback. In his situation, my solution would have been to end the conversation before it started, by not replying to my first interjection. For context, Phil and I are both kiwis, which given how small this country is, is almost like being in the same city. We have interacted here a lot in the past.So it wasn't like I was just jumping into a conversation with someone who didn't know me from a bar of soap. And mask etiquette is a live issue here.

(2/2)And mask etiquette is a live issue here. People like Phil are often arguing for a return to compulsory mask mandates, like what we had during and just after the lockdowns. I think this is irrational and politically dangerous for the left, so I try to challenge the logic of it whenever I see it come up.
