"What has happened is that the British government announced plans to cede control of the Chagos Islands, which is a territory in the British Indian Ocean that the British government has controlled since 1814. Should that happen, the British Indian Ocean Territory could wind up no longer existing, and the two-letter country code, IO, would cease to exist."#JackWallen, Oct 2024https://thenewstack.io/what-is-the-future-of-the-io-domain/#IO #ChagosIslands #IndianOcean #BritishIndianOceanTerritoryWoah! According to the linked statement though, the British military base on the Chagos island of Diego Garcia will continue to operate, for at least a century. Meaning that the Chagoissians who were evicted from their ancestral homes there will still not be allowed to return;https://www.gov.uk/government/news/joint-statement-between-uk-and-mauritius-3-october-2024The next step in the fight for justice for Chagossians is clearly to get that base shut down, and the island returned to its traditional owners.

@8petros > .io TLD should stay as the source of income to help Chagossians restart their homelandThat seems like a just solution. The problem, from a bureaucratic point of view, is that the Chagoss Island will be part of Mauritius, which (presumably) has its own country TLD. But as Jack says in the conclusion to his article, it could just be converted into a non-country TLD like .social.
