#ttrpg #pnpde bubbles, I kind of love #shadowrun, i.e. #cyberpunk plus magic plus dragons, a little on the goofy, pink mohawk side. I keep hearing that none of the Shadowrun editions work really well, rules wise. What is a Shadowrun-y game or set of rules that you can recommend?

@nisjasper I'd say that at least the first and second edition of #Shadowrun worked pretty well. That was before a lot of the overcomplication got dropped in, and it's probably the purest example of gameplay that you're going to find in the series. Are there some fairly obvious cheese mechanisms? Absolutely. Does them being so obvious make it easy to make sure they don't show up at the table? Absolutely. In my mind, you don't want a whole lot of mechanics getting in the way of your cyberpunk/fantasy future (cyber-fantasy?) And to that end, I would go with something as light as Wushu (https://danielbayn.com/wushu/). It's extremely rules-light and will absolutely stay out of your way while you're doing cool things. It's one of my favorite systems for recommending for any situation where action is likely to be at a premium, but action is not all it can do. (Cont.)#TTRPG #cyberpunk

@nisjasper If you're looking for something a little edgier and not much more weight in terms of mechanics, though there are some you might want to look into CBR + PNK (https://emanoelmelo.itch.io/cbrpnk-core). The core system comes on a trifold, which is already pretty strangely cutting edge. The layout recalls Mork Borg, but without being quite so extreme on the eyeballs. It is designed to play fast and go hard. There are some lightweight mechanics for wizardry, and doing fantasy species within the context is not hard either. While not free at $10 even, you're not looking at a huge investment. I like it, but it's not particularly geared toward long-term campaign style play, but rather one-offs and short arcs. However, nothing says campaign like a series of short arcs that are related to one another, so make of that what you will.(Cont.)#TTRPG #CBRPNK

@nisjasper There is, of course, Runners in the Shadows (https://markcleveland.itch.io/runners-in-the-shadows), which is a Forged in the Dark pseudo-Shadowrun run which very much might scratch your itch for something better than the Shadowrun mechanics themselves if you're familiar with Blades in the Dark and how it plays, but more importantly, how it's structured. It works extremely well for cyberpunk stories which include fantasy and magic elements along the way. I'd almost feel perfectly comfortable putting this forward as the best suggestion for exactly what you want (except that I'm more likely to be playing Wushu than almost any other GM-full RPG at this point).#TTRPG #FitD #RunnersInTheShadows

@lextenebris @nisjasper the universe is clearly trying to tell me something here. In the last month, I finally bought my first ever shadowrun book after admiring it for 30+ years. I find out my favorite streamer (hi @djpatattack) is a Shadowrun OG.You and he both tell me the 1-2e was the best version. Maybe I should start a Shadowrun game.

@pjsliney @nisjasper It turns out that you're going to love the article I spent most of the day writing then. Any excuse to get more people into Runners in the Shadows and also any excuse to make a Fleetwood Mac reference.

@lextenebrisI agree. We've been playing SR2 for years. Some rules feel strange but always work and can easily be replaced by house rules or gm-gut-feeling.The only exception is the rule about rapid fire with automatic weapons. That rule increases the damage but makes it harder to hit with every round you fire in a burst. Which completely prevents spray and pray.@nisjasper
