There would be so many fewer "mysterious cases" if only people understood:1. The Ocean is Big (and it's hard to find things in the oceans)2. The Woods are Big (and it's hard to find people in the woods)3. The human mind and imagination are powerful4. Memories are malleable, and this is true of even serious and "sober" people5. Scientists are desperate to the the first to show off evidence of Strange Things and will fight each other for the chance. Ain't nobody covering up anything crazy.

There are so many of these stories where the thing that makes it a "mystery" is "They vanished into a desert/ocean/woods and no one could find them!"But... that's what real wild places do. They can get you lost. You can vanish. Even sitting resting in the open on a tree. There are so many trees and nobody looks at the one where you are. I do think about my plans to sail around on the ocean with some trepidation in light of this. But, I'm going to have all the beacons and trackers.

@futurebird I know, right? And a cow would be like four times as much work as a human body.

@futurebird this reminds me of when I was having trouble finding a great white shark tooth online which for some reason I thought would be nbd because they shed those and then I was like "oh right they're probably mostly on the bottom of the sea"

@futurebird And if someone starts a story by stating they remember it well, they are just buying time to make up details to something they _might_ remember."I remember it well. It was the year of the fearful Diplodocus and them be hard times with the Diplodocus being fearful and all :ablobcatknitsweats:"

@Mayabotics This is the most logical and also frankly scary explanation of "mysterious stairs" that I've heard yet.
