       Argh, the son (10 yo) keeps pestering us about Messenger KIds for chatting with his friends. As much as I don't mind the application in itself, but it is in a way grooming them towards later consumption of Big Tech social media. Additionally, I hate that you have to have a full #Facebook account as a parent for parental control.Any suggestions?#privacy #SocialMedia #chat #ParentalControll #alternatives #MessengerKids

       It is grooming them for digital slavery and they don't need it. Your aversion is the correct instinct.You could just tell the son, no. That's what I would do. I'd tell him he can chat with his friends when he is physically in meet space with them. He might be upset. Who cares. You're the boss and you know what's best for him. He doesn't.Just my two cents worth.

       @phlogiston tell him, he should convince his friends to use irc.if the topic comes up again, give in. install a router that you can freely program and make it drop 90% of packages from the service, so that the messenger will feel very slow. he will at some point find out, but that will eventually teach him a lesson on the value of net neutrality

       @phlogiston i know this isn't a solution to your problem, because there probably isn't any. put yourself in his shoes. do you think there'd be anything that would stop you from secretly creating an account, if your parents didn't want you to do so?Maybe watching some dystopian movies that are about the problem of digital privacy and surveillance with him could help. i don't know your son, so i can't say if that would make him understand why it's in his interrest to not give his data to meta.
