My carpenter ants have two "logs" these are wooden logs with chambers for their nest and a plexi-glass cover that allows you to see in. The logs are each connected to terrariums, which are connected to each other by a two-meter-long plastic tube. The queen is in the "upper nest" but the ants have decided that the larvae and pupae all must go in the lower nest. Which means they run down that long tube and through the out-world with the larvae... but I've NEVER caught them doing this!

I suspect they only will transfer the precious young larvae in the deep of night, and only if it's been very quiet for a long time. But this shows that just because you find a log full of ants and pupae/larvae you can't assume the queen is there too. I wonder how far they'd be willing to travel? When I add their new nest in the Spring I think I will give them a VERY long path (to the other bookshelf)And hopefully this will help with their general desire to escape and explore my apartment.

The thing is even when ants do escape they are easy to get back into the nest. They become distressed and want to go home. When I've had an issue I always find them trying to chew their way through the screen on the top of the nest. Although. This being winter it's been MONTHS since I've had an escaped ant. They get the most crazy in August.

@futurebird Sensible. If you're escaping from NYC, August is much better.

@futurebird could they transfer their larvae through the outworld while you're away at work, during the day?
