@josh0 @futurebird I hope it does work out this way, though I wouldn't hold my breath. Also, I do not trust how they are going to administer this money. The MTA is already fiscally mismanaged. Fingers crossed though.

@MagentaRocks @josh0 Why do you say the MTA is mismanaged? They are more like underfunded from what I understand.

@futurebird @josh0 That too. The entire agency is a complex financial nightmare. Fares and tolls keep increasing and service keeps getting worse. Instead of getting their act together with managing costs, new sources of 'revenue' like congestion pricing are depended upon. This report is eyeopening with details. Of course it is a no-win situation being a government agency. https://www.osc.ny.gov/files/reports/pdf/report-9-2024.pdf

@MagentaRocks @josh0 Fares only cover about 40 percent of the costs and the ongoing capital projects. There are hundreds of stations that need to be renovated and that still lack elevators. The signals need to be replaced. Those projects are being put off as it is. (though they do a few stations each year)I've gone through their budget and really a lot of this is Pataki's fault for not helping them get debt down. But also, they need better funding.

@futurebird @josh0 And don't forgot tolls! How high must the cost to cross a bridge or tunnel be?Yes, more funding and funding that is not paid directly by individual people. Your point about Pataki is important because he created a hole they can't dig out from.I just do not trust the funds from congestion pricing will be the magic it needs. They'll be coming back soon, asking for that to increase or dream up another 'source' - all paid by individual people.

@MagentaRocks @josh0 You are correct that it won't be magic. But maybe my 90-something mother in-law via my brother out in Flatbush will see an elevator before she dies. And maybe the bus will sit in traffic a little less. That's progress.

@futurebird @josh0 I'm not disagreeing with you! I simply do not trust they won't screw up the money side of things. If they were better at fiscal responsibility, they wouldn't be so dependent on congestion pricing for their funding!https://mastodon.coffee/@MagentaRocks/113744784582259245

@MagentaRocks @josh0 Nearly every person who works in the administration of the MTA, with the notable exception of the top leadership and the board essentially takes a pay cut vs. what they could make in the private sector doing the same job. For this they get two things: a little more job security over time AND the knowledge they are working for *transit* which is something people need that ought to be done well.

@MagentaRocks @josh0 Those who work union jobs do OK too. And LIRR is a little shady, but Metro North is pure as the driven snow. These union jobs have decent wages and I think they deserve it. The top leadership is subject to "political forces" and if someone is "screwing it up" it'd be then. But more often than not the problem is simple: the USA doesn't care about public transit enough. No matter that NYC only exists and is an amazing place *because* of public transit.

@MagentaRocks @josh0 So, I get a little frustrated with the general insinuation that "the MTA is incompetent" I don't think they are perfect but they are no worse or better than any big public agency. If you want to point out something in particular they are doing wrong? Great. Let's go. I'll help. But this line about general corruption feeds into the destruction of public will to do what's need to get them back on track, drown the debit and get the capital projects DONE.

I'm from the Bronx, and I'm but a simple school teacher and I'm so excited that we're gonna have congestion pricing in NYC after all. Why didn't FOX interview me for the "Bronx perspective" nobody up here can afford to own a car we ride the bus and sit behind all the jerkoffs from westchester. Yeah. I said it. Anyway this is gonna be great.

@futurebird I'm on the edge of Atlanta's urbanization, and likewise have no patience for the suburbanites who think it's their right to drive through my neighborhood on their important trips. They seem to think that they deserve all the convenience of a city without needing to put up with living near other people -- and that they have a right to push extra pollution and hazards onto those of us living in the city.

@futurebird last NYC trip I thought the roads in manhattan were unnecessarily congested. Never have I ever had any desire to drive anywhere in the city
