@stux @Bette I've also blocked Threads. If sometime in the future they prove to be better than their Facebook/Meta parents, I may reconsider. But the burden of proof is on them.

@brayd The main reason we federate is the connections with people who "just can"t" join masto or the fedi yet but are interestedWhen they get the time to learn and take it all in they will join the fedi on their own term at some point but they do need the introOfc there are lines if it comes to Meta and such.. thin lines

@stux I engage in deradicalization work. I like to approach it as though I’m helping someone eradicate malware in their mind. The approach works for me and those that reach out to me for help.And I do hang out in places where there are a lot of potential folks to help. But there are places I won’t go because it’s pointless for me to expose myself to that much psychic poison, especially when I do this unpaid as a service.Meta is a purveyor and aggregator of psychic poison.

@stux Yeah, I hadn't thought about how that might flood a feed. It's a real bummer. Of course it'd be better to actually be on an ActivityPub platform but since Threads can talk to the Fediverse, it's a convenient way to get news that's not a repost bot.But, yeah, the bot situation gave me pause. Maybe it's just all gone except BlueSky and Mastodon?

@stux I don't want that shit either. But if I understand correctly, if a site federated with Threads, the federated feed will only show posts from Threads that are followed by someone on the local instance, and there is no "push" mechanism that overwhelms the instance with slop from Threads. Do I have that wrong?

@stux I've generally been supportive of Threads as it gives us access to some accounts that will never be on Mastodon. But... If AI bots show up en masse in our feeds I will also consider a block.

@stux Mechanical Turks datamining via Threads are almost as bad as any automated bots geared more towards same, but mostly concerned with increasing engagement stats.I can’t tell you how often I have mentioned an obscurity here, to visit Facebook later and see that a bespoke ‘group’ had surfaced dedicated to the same cultural rabbit hole.

@stux The threads (and bsky) dot net domains, along with their variations, have been preemptively blocked on my end for a while, for my own mental well-being. 🙄 Has it gotten bad out there in general #HephalumpWorld?
