The US and New Zealand are the only countries that allow direct-to-consumer advertising for prescription drugs.https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2801060

@dannyman > The US and New Zealand are the only countries that allow direct-to-consumer advertising for prescription drugsI agree this is horrifying. To our credit though, unlike the US we have a publicly-funded drug dealer (Pharmac) that does most of our drug buying for us. In some cases we pay nothing ourselves for the drugs we need (eg ADHD meds if you're low income).@nwchapman

@strypey @dannyman NZ is also the country that gave us Bro Town, so obviously Kiwis rock. And I saw that as an Aussie so that's pretty serious.I haven't watched NZ tv for quite a while, but it was also WAAAYYYYY less inundated with drug ads. These days, I feel like the only ads on American TV are for football, cars and (not fun) drugs.

Bro Town is awesome. Around the time it was on TV, Unite Union had their HQ in Morningside. Gangster.@nwchapman> I haven't watched NZ tv for quite a while, but it was also WAAAYYYYY less inundated with drug adsI'm an outlier but I literally *never* see them. It's mostly a waste of time advertising drugs to patients if Pharmac is already buying them. So I imagine the bulk of Big Pharma influence campaigns here target doctors.@dannyman
