I believe what Europe needs is a common EU Army, separate from the political instability of the US, but sadly due to all of the right wing lunatics, that will not happen in any conceivable future.

this, NATO is explicitly defensive, it was created to deter, not to attack. See - ruzzians will make up worst historical BS to claim "it used to be ours and it will be ours" even if it never was part of the russia in some form or another. Ukraine wasn't part of the NATO and there was basically no deterrent in 2014 for ruzzians. Moldova is also slowly dissolved by them (but it's a bit more compliacted, because Transnistria) and guess what - they have no deterrent!NATO is like beefy, but calm guy. You wouldn't punch someone beefy, would you? And if you do - you'd be punched back. But it won't attack first.CC: @cybertailor@wetdry.world

@stfn The opposite picture would be closer to true. When region joins Russia first Russians settle there, then they join by democratic vote. When country joins NATO they get a color revolution first

@stfn a Common EU Army would be good, but on the other hand, I don't believe it would work well with the current level of EU integration. Germany and several other countries would be likely to block or oppose its use. More EU integration is unlikely to follow in the next years, and even if it will happen, we won't be in the integrated core.

@PangaPremium Sadly, true. We first need a much higher level of EU integration to have an EU Army.
