Amazon is flooding striking workers at DBK4 in Queens with freezing water in sub-zero weather, endangering everyone. If you can, please do not shop at Amazon right now. @Npars01 @davidaugust Why are any of these companies getting a dime of taxpayer money if they make tens of billions in profits every year? Explain it to me like I'm in kindergarden, meaning no BS about "markets".

@lin11c @Npars01 @davidaugust I’m not supporting it, just explaining it. I hate it.Building a factory? The company gets incentive offers from multiple states, each wanting the jobs to be in their state. It says on the graphic that Nevada offered 1.3B to Tesla. NV thinks that if their citizens have jobs, then the govnr/legislators will get re-elected. Getting re-elected matters more than being fiscally responsible.Taxpayers are buying their own job.

@dashrb @Npars01 @davidaugust They get federal subsidies correct? Oil and gas have been getting them for decades? Why?"How much does the US subsidize oil and gas? It's not just the US: according to the International Energy Agency, fossil fuel handouts hit a global high of $1 trillion in 2022 – the same year Big Oil pulled in a record $4 trillion of income. In the United States, by some estimates taxpayers pay about $20 billion dollars every year to the fossil fuel industry. May 3, 2023"

@lin11c @dashrb @davidaugust The gas & oil subsidies does not even include the cleanup costs of their superfund sites. https://projects.propublica.org/toxmap/The Cancer Alley in Louisiana alone is going to cost billions.https://www.propublica.org/article/welcome-to-cancer-alley-where-toxic-air-is-about-to-get-worsehttps://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cancer_Alley

@davidaugust I JUST CANCELLED MY AMAZON PRIME MEMBERSHIP. Bezos needs us more than we need him, and it's time he learned that.

@merileedkarr @davidaugust Congratulations! You'll find that if you spend a few extra minutes searching around, often you can find what you are looking for less than on Amazon. I use Amazon for reviews, but I almost never buy anything through that platform. Maybe once or twice per year. I also will go directly to the Amazon store's external website and buy direct from the seller, hopefully cutting out the Amazonian middleman.

@argv_minus_one @elaterite @merileedkarr have we found an Amazon employed Pinkerton here to tell us about the unalloyed great things about what Amazon does and offers? Let’s find out folks. We all wait with baited breath for the next defense of Amazon and Bezos. /s

@davidaugust I use the Amazon website to search for book details that I then use to order from my local independent bookstore.

@garthoid @davidaugust I use Amazon to find the ISBN of a book as well. They always have it, whereas it can be hard to find it elsewhere.

@kimlockhartga @garthoid they do have appealing offerings. And isolated away from the harms Bezos creates and inflicts, they are compelling.

Bypassing Amazon has saved me a few hundred dollars this year. It's What I call "Amazonless Prime Day". Find a deal on the Amazon site, then go to the manufacturer's own site and find the same deal, with a coupon to sweeten it further.@leighms @davidaugust
