Mojeek here with our better-late-than-never #introductionsWe're on a mission to build the world's alternative search engine; a search engine that does what's right, that values and respects your privacy, whilst providing results from its own index, ordered with its own ranking algorithm: https://www.mojeek.com/about/We're here to toot about new functionality, pictures of servers, peertube-hosted explainers, and the spiciest anti-big-tech memes https://mstdn.social/@privacydingus (main admin) can come up with

@Mojeek Damn, that sounds ambitious. Such a relief if it wins.

@Mojeek Kudos to Mojeek for picking up my community activism books in their index. Think I'll be using this more often.

@Mojeek How do we know if what you promise is true? I see nothing open sourced, only API's. Or do we just need to blindly trust you? Maybe separating the search data and the frontend would be an idea. So that the frontend is decentralized, so privacy issues are less centralized.

@joenepraat that is fair enough if that is the bar that is needed to be cleared by a service in order to gain your trust. We've been crawling, indexing, and providing no-tracking search since 2004 without anything problematic arising (actually the first on record to have put up anything about privacy in the space). You can read a touch more here: https://blog.mojeek.com/2022/07/frequently-asked-questions-about-mojeek-open-source-tor-and-crawling.html

@Mojeek Thank you for your reply. 2004?! That's a long time, I didn't know that.

@joenepraat slow and steady, if you're a fan of reading long pieces we put this one out for our privacy birthday (15 years since the policy was put up): https://blog.mojeek.com/2021/03/to-track-or-not-to-track.htmlYou'll probably notice the numerical discrepancy there, which is due to the fact that although we didn't track from the first day, it wasn't until 2006 that the policy was put up. Back then it wasn't something of concern for most on this beautiful interconnected network of machines 😀
