do Gentoo users configure the kernel features by hand as well?

@kaia if your lazy you can use the binary kernel, but the last 15 years I configured most options of the kernel.

@kaia depends. If it is relatively sure that you come across different devices like usb serial adapters i configure all or at least the most common. But stuff like GPU or network cards, where I don't expect different drivers i use only those.

@kaia after a few rounds of not working devices you are painfully aware of what drivers you need

@kaia @cell Well https://www.shlomifish.org/humour/by-others/funroll-loops/Gentoo-is-Rice.html is supposed to be a meme.Kernel config is more interesting to avoid occasional weird distro choices, like there's a lot of security toggles and of course some are a bit arbitrary from a distro pov.And being able to use the version+patches you need, like for bugfixes or very recent hardware.

@kaia @tk i did this too in the past. right now im to lazyupside is better support, actual meaningful dmesg messages (usually they are full with some errors which never matter), less attack surface, optimization (there are many options with certain trades, and sometimes there is a big difference between ur needs/wishes and the mainstream approach) + better driver support for niche hardware, + less binary blobsdownside: it takes a few hours. especially if u try to understand all the options for the first timei would do it again if i have a cool new laptop. ricing is fun, not only desktop level. having a nice encryption setup , with coreboot, boot verification, backups, deduplicating filesystem and a nice wm config with a nice terminal config with a nice shell config is mental self care

@grillchen @kaia Currently I'm trying to move to aarch64 by misusing a chromebook. So for the short while I'll use the kernel it came with, but in the long run I hope to get a mainline or gentoo kernel running on it as well. But switching from uefi/grub to depthcharge and learning about device trees is another steep learning curve for me
