I feel like I haven't punctuated this point enough, and it deserves to be hammered on further because I think all these delusional warped "aspirations" people have in the currentyear have already set shit in motion that's going to lead to a bunch of fucked up shit in the coming decades which we won't be able to stop. More kids aspire to be YouTubers or Twitch streamers than astronauts now, and while both goals are similarly unlikely to be fulfilled, there's a very important distinction between them. A kid who wants to be an astronaut will very likely not actually become one, but that dream can lead him down many paths that lead him to be a fulfilled, productive adult. A kid who wants to be an e-celeb will also very likely not actually become one, but it's also a dream that has very little substance. There are not many paths that the aspirational e-celeb will be led down that will lead to an adult that lives a healthy, productive existence. Going to sperg a little and say that astronaut is a stupid aspiration because manned space flight has been a technological dead end since Apollo 17 and the dream can only be maintained by completely misunderstanding Apollo and everything that happened afterwards. It's the kind of thinking that led to the completely retarded pile of shit that is the ISS and the slightly less retarded deathtrap that was the space shuttle.The aspiration to be a "content creator" at least forces some level of technical media production knowledge, which we don't need more of but it's at least employable.

A more optimistic argument is that any boy aspiring to be an astronaut should be funneled towards being a spacex engineer, more progress towards the stars happened in one decade at spacex than has happened in 50 at nasa.

Nerds who loved computers made it happen, not the brass who wanted to utilize it for war. As much as I hate the military industrial complex, I imagine many of the engineers who design cutting edge fighter jets just wanted to build badass aircraft, it's just war providing the economic incentive for them to do so. They would still be incredibly valuable skilled individuals in pursuits outside of war, just as the people who built ARPANET were.
