       On Alive Time/Dead Time (from Robert Greene's Daily Laws, December 6th)The thing about Dead Time is, you don't even know you're in it. It's this slow rot, this invisible erosion. You think you're living, but really, you're just this meat puppet going through the motions. At CPP Corp, I had a desk job in Tensile Testing. An office that smelled like burnt coffee & broken dreams. Every morning, I tested metal sample bars & stamped product papers that nobody read.

       Every weekend I went home to a relationship that was basically two people pretending not to hear the death rattle of a relationship that once meant something. My creative work was just some hobby I'd talk about to avoid admitting how much of a nothing life I was living. And then everything fell apart. BOOM! Relationship? Kaput. Job? Quit. Dead Time was dead, but not in the way you think. Not in some triumphant victorious way.

       More like a fire that burns down your house while you stand outside barefoot, holding a bunch of junk & wondering if that's even worth saving. So I did the thing you're not supposed to. I leaned into the chaos. Went back to grad school. Started devouring philosophy like it was an antidote to the poison of my old life. Stuff nobody talks about. Taboo thinkers. Ideas sharp enough to cut if you weren't careful. I sat down with comic art pages & just started drawing. Writing.

       Building Pantheon one panel at a time. I didn't care if anyone ever read it. Didn't care if it went anywhere. It was mine. For the first time in years, something was mine. Ownership. Fast-forward to 2017. 300 plus pages done. A publisher. An editor. Colorists. New job at CSULB. Alive Time. The green stuff. The good stuff. Then 6 years later, 3 volumes of Pantheon are out in the world. And I'm a full-time lecturer.

       Here's the truth. Dead Time is easy. Comfortable. It's what happens when you let other people own you. But Alive Time? That's war. That's waking up everyday & choosing to fight. Fighting inertia. Fighting your own fear. Fighting the versions of you that would rather stay asleep. Yeah, it's messy, yeah it hurts, but Alive Time is the only thing worth the pain. The only thing that actually means something.

       @threeforks @futurebird Thanks. Fighting that inertia is the real battle, & age doesn't make it easier. It just changes the stakes. Old geezer or not, the fact that you're still fighting means you're alive. That's what counts. Alive Time sure ain't about being young or fast. It's about being present & making the moments yours. Keep at it.
