i had an epiphany about tig welding yesterday: the oxygen absorbing and contaminant dispersing properties of filler rods are short lived- so there is a timing aspect to adding filler rod then moving away or stopping the heat

i am starting to get a better rhythm to my walking-the-cup fillet weld method and producing some better stronger welds even if the base material isn't perfectly clean

this is part of why wire feed MIG can be a lot simpler and easier than TIG, it's always adding fresh filler no matter what. vs TIG you're having to control that separately

@meowski@fluf.club i like welding cuz you can go faster AND it'll be better if u can still get it looking good

@shibao i got a decent stretch of fillet here then slowed down in the corner and it started to crater a bit. still overall solid enough

it's still boogery on the surface but the porosity is low. satisfactory strength wise i guess

@meowski@fluf.club yea mig, i haven't done tig yet -3-for mig you're going back and forth right? not just only in one direction

@meowski@fluf.club i guess if you're filling in more significant gaps you can do other shapes, but for just joining stuff i just like to go back and forth, i'm trying to find a videoi guess they call it a pull but you double back just horizontally, and it ends up looking like stacking dimes

@meowski@fluf.club https://youtu.be/yqGBAH39ryo?si=UfFLTLYdMeOh5TR4&t=250 this guy sorts of shows it, although he needs to slow down the wire speed to get a better weld, but i'd say just use the regular wire speed, go at more of an angle and then you can basically get the reduced speed result at a normal speed

@shibao you can use both directions. i find walking the cup easier trailing backwards

@shibao yar im trying to do something along those lines, intermittently dipping the filler rodi also have a wire feed arc welder. its convenient but lacks shield gas which i want to add sometime

@meowski@fluf.club i feel like i wouldn't care for many intermittent techniques because i'd really want to get a weld that penetrates as much as i can before it starts to weaken the metal

@shibao i use stitching sometimes on thin sheet metal or if i'm having problems. my tig has a pulse feature that does this. you can set the high and low current, duty cycle and pulse frequency

@meowski@fluf.club yeah i guess my rule of thumb is that i want penetrating welds while cooking the rest of the part as little as possible, so i'd rather just use regular power and increase speed rather than trying to decrease time where that heat has more time to build up and cook the part around the welds

@shibao the main advantage of stitching that i see is minimizing heat distortion by jumping around to different sections of your part, so everything distorts evenly and stays square, while also giving each section time to cool, and it seems to help improve control in some situationsi think so long as you get enough heat in that spot for good penetration it's fine
