What makes a lesson memorable? When I think about all the hours I’ve spent in math class there are moments that stand out. The most brilliant among them? Using a compass in grade 9 to construct a pentagon. The sound of sharpened lead on paper, a fine tracery of lines developing under my direction. That final compass mark, almost, but not quite meeting where it ought were the construction perfect. And knowing that, nonetheless, it *was* perfect, in some other way, in The Realm of Mathematics.

I don’t think, as I teacher, I can will such experiences into being, but, maybe I can make conditions where they might occur. Some of it is about knowledge, facts, skills, basic mastery— but a big component is also about belonging: that sense that you aren’t just a visitor in a fancy museum— but, also a curator, one of the ones with the keys to the basement, all of the secrets and treasures in back rooms and drawers. You might, be the one to decide what’s worthy of being put in the spotlight.

@futurebird I can still remember the same activity! And the same tiny gap, circled in red pen.

@futurebird The two that stand out for me were both in my pre-calculus class. In one memorable math experience, the teacher would have us chant “logs are exponents! logs are exponents!” and randomly ask us “what are logs?” to get the required answer “exponents”. I’ve forgotten some of things I learned, but I’ll always remember what a logarithm is (an exponent).

The other was when she hyped up introducing the most beautiful math equation. As high school kids, we weren’t familiar with the idea of medical beauty, so we were incredulous. But for the next month during various lessons, she would tell us to pay attention — we would need to know, say, Taylor series, to understand the most beautiful math equation. By the end of the month, we all dying to know what it was, and we were not disappointed when she finally taught us Euler’s identity.

@futurebird I remember how refraction is a function of the relative densities of the materials at the boundary because of a trick question I got wrong on a physics test.

@futurebird I had a great HS chemistry teacher, but the most memorable moment was her story, during the lesson on ideal gasses, that she met an old student who remembered nothing except "PV=nRT", and her prediction was that we would all remember that, and indeed that is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of her class.

@futurebird One of the most profound moments in my formal education was in an immunology course. The prof asked for volunteers, and handed us a cane. She told all four of us to hold the cane, but sporadically let go with at least one hand each. The cane never fell.

@futurebird Kindergarten teacher took us outdoors to look for fool's gold, told us how birds built their nest and showed us a bird's nest. :)
