it turns out it's a special layer of hell to watch on youtube try and mostly fail to repair a device you've repaired before

especially since you've been yelling since minute one that THERE'S A SERVICE MANUAL, YOU SHOULD LOOK UP HOW THAT CABLE IS ROUTED: IT'S IMPORTANT

fun fact: double-sided laserdisc players have a single ribbon cable that is used to let the read head flip upside down to read the top as well as the bottom.the routing of that flex cable is fucking CRUICIAL

you do it wrong and the player will rip the cable in half trying to play the top side

like don't get me wrong, I've also repaired laserdisc players without looking up manuals I should have (I repair a surprising number of laserdisc players for 2024), but you shouldn't make my mistakes

also everyone is obsessed with changing belts.your laserdisc player probably doesn't have a belt. That's not how Pioneer made them (at least in the last decade or so, maybe some of the early players did)

they've got a spin-the-disc motor, a move-the-head motor, and an eject-the-tray motor. No belts on any of those, they're just geared

@foone I have never read manuals. I have touched. Feels like paper.

The tray gears are probably the easiest to break. especially if the tray ever got stuck open, and someone tried to close it manually. That'll easily just destroy the track, which is plastic on many models

but you won't need to replace a belt. No belts.

@foone laserdisc fascinates me, but maybe that’s because I never seen a laserdisc player, or laserdisc in my entire life (apparently they were only popular in Japan and North America)

@foone so I have definitely pulled apart and attempted to repair some devices that I don’t know enough about. But when you’re pulling out the non-soldering-iron power tools, something in the back of your head should be saying “wait a minute”

@foone oh god I hope it’s not like when The 8-Bit Gun absolutely destroyed the leather handle of an old luggable (don’t remember which) by Retrobriting the case, exposing the leather to corrosive fumes

@gregly thankfully not (they just were adjusting some temporary DIY fixes they had added) but I still had a moment of OH GOD NO NOT THE DREMEL and I got 8-bit-guy flashbacks

@foone If it had been just that stuff with him I’d have let it pass; god knows some of my early “restoration” or repair attempts were total nightmares… but his later “open-carrying an automatic weapon at the store to own the libs” video milkshake-ducked him faster than I thought possible.

@foone I've recently watched several Power Mac G5 repair videos. They all go like this: 1. Stop tugging on that cover, there's a pin to remove first. No, just stop. Nooo! He bent it.2. Don't touch that heatsink, it's fragile, handle it by the HUGE METAL HANDLE on top. Good, he realized he's ruining the delicate fins. Nooo! He removed the handle.3. Don't yank that out, there are screws underneath! Oh god.4. Oh no he's got a second one for “spares”. The first one was fine until you touched it!
