"I should buy an amiga" is the retrotech version of "I should buy a boat"

@foone you know what they say, in order to afford one Amiga you need to be able to buy five Amigas

The funny thing is that I've tried to buy an amiga before. I talked to someone on craigslist about buying one and I had the money and everything, and they were like "Meet me at the Foobar Coffee on RoadName at 7" I was there at 7pm. They weren't. I emailed them, and they said they meant 7am, and they'd already sold it in the meantime

@foone still super mad that my A500 died many years ago. I'd love to play around with one again but the prices are just silly.

@gsuberland that's the thing. the prices have shot WAY up and it seems to be at the age where all amigas are either "broken" or "repaired", much like laserdiscs the era of "just still works" is barely there anymore

@gsuberland so it's expensive to get into, and you need lots of repairs, which are expensive in time and/or money

@foone The good thing is there were only a few models, so you'd only need to buy one or two. maybe a 1000 and 1000 with phoenix board, an A2000 - and some spares for it, maybe a 2500HD for the badge, and one to put a sidecar on, an A3000 - oh and an A3000/UX just for the badging, and of course get into broadcast stuff so an A4000 and rackmount 3000/4000 - and towers of each of those. Oh and the consoles! A 600 1200 1200Escom and 500. May as well get a 1500 while you're there, and some of the...

@foone No joke. I overpaid for a restored one and it didn’t even come with a mouse. Then I looked for a mouse and eBay was basically like, “you’re joking, right?”Wound up hacking the innards of a PS/2 mouse to do quadrature output.

@lilybryght I've got like, two? neither work, one has an incomplete attempted upgrade on it by someone previous owner. my roommate just bought one but can't hook it up to anything yet because it's a PAL machine and she needs a different scaler.

@foone I’ve had original Amigas with all the add-ons to make life easy when transferring data between an A1200 and PC.These days I have an A500 Mini, a Startech powered USB hub and a cheap 240GB USB SSD loaded up with the Aminimiga package of software, which turns the A500 Mini into a ready-to-go A1200-like dev and gaming machine. It’s fast, convenient and can even be coaxed to use RTG for a native 720p output

@foone @foone I lusted after Amigas back in the day but never made the leap; now that I've got the resources to just go buy one if I want, I am sometimes tempted. Then I remember how fucking DIFFERENT they are.Anyway I've got too many irons in the fire. Better I spend the time finishing one of the two books I've got in progress, or building the household entertainment system. (Hey, wait, I could use an Ami-<SLAP!/>)

@foone I always wished I’d had a chance to use one back in the day. My brother had an A600HD which he only ever played games on, but they seemed to be spectacular machines that could do so much more.
