Ant ChessEach player begins in a corner with one queen and three pawns. Your goal is to eliminate all of the other queen(s)* You receive a pawn for every queen each turn. * For every 8 pawn you control you may receive a knight instead of a pawn.* promote pawn to queen to receive more than one piece per turn.

I'm a little concerned that the standard queen is too powerful of a piece. Ant queens are more like Kings generally, so there might also need to be a rule that queens move like queens if just promoted... but then after that they drop their wings and can only move like kings.

@futurebird @kern what happens when the board inevitably gets gridlocked and there are more pieces coming into play than can be taken?

@futurebird Obviously the pawns are allowed to wander off the board.

@futurebird Where do you put the new pawns? Anywhere? Within a certain distance of the queen?Do you place new pawns before or after your regular move?It seems to me the board would very quickly become cluttered up with pawns. Since real ants show no hesitation in climbing over each other, maybe the rules for pawn moves need to be loosened.

@flying_saucers @kern Filling the board is the secret other goal of the game. No one wins. The world is full of ants!Everyone wins?

@llewelly "It seems to me the board would very quickly become cluttered up with pawns."You say this like it's a bug rather than a feature... (or should I say like it's a feature rather than a BUG.)

@futurebird You could also have drones that can move like queens once (or a set number of times at least), and then die automatically.Maybe you'd even have to explicitly choose to hatch a drone instead of a worker, and it would only last a few turns or until it moved so many hops? And perhaps their attack is a suicide attack?

@mansr Yeah I think that would make sense. Queens can be boring pieces in some ways. (pawn is my favorite piece.)

@ollicle New workers must be adjacent to a queen or adjacent to another worker (yours) who is adjacent to a queen or adjacent to a worker, who is adjacent to a worker ... you get the idea.

@futurebird there’s got to be a mechanism that provides benefit for creating unbroken chains of worker ants.Like permitting the new worker to be placed into the position where an existing piece might otherwise be diagonally moved. Providing that worker is connected to the queen in the chain. Moving in unison along a trail.

@ollicle I might try to get the board game club to play test some of this... although if they catch on that it's about ants they will all start groaning. I wonder how long I can keep them in the dark about that?

@futurebird @mansr Perhaps something like Shogi where you turn the pieces in various ways to mark the change in movement rules.(it is way over 40 years since I played it so I remember no details).
