James Clerk Maxwell wasn't trying to develop technology that would make computer screens and radio communications possible, he just thought reflections and magnets were really interesting!If you want a more recent example, for years new parents were told to put their babies to sleep lying face down. The received wisdom was that cot death was caused by things falling into the babies' mouths and making them choke. This was considered so obvious it wasn't worth researching. Thankfully, someone researched it anyway. As a result, we now know that babies are safer if they sleep on their backs. This bit of pointless research has saved many lives.

I do find it hard to imagine a time where the ethics of smell in literature will be useful. or interesting. But I do agree examining not the size of a postage stamp, but the corner of one, does seem to be what phds are for.

We are no better placed to judge whether this will be 'useful' one day than Maxwell's contemporaries were when he was mucking about with his magnets.(useful in inverted commas because it could be argued that anything that adds to the sum total of human knowledge is useful)

@EatKnitSleepAgain @FeartnTired @GrumpyOldNurse @benis_redux @brendamccann Both me, the eldest and #3 are super smellers, it is a huge part of our lives as it effects things like travel sickness, morning sickness and sleep issues. But smell is also massively linked to memory and the ability to envoke past times and experienced feelings, so it's use in literature is quite interesting to me. Just today listening to Career of Evil, Galbraith used the term miasma in a wonderfully appropriate way, I could quite literally smell what she was talking about. It was great.
