nearly a decade ago I discovered a bug in my keyboard and it made me so angry that I had to get into mechanical keyboards and making my own keyboards to avoid it.I just discovered another keyboard with the same bug, and it's built into my laptop.excuse me I need to scream and find the location of the nearest lake to drop it in now

to find out if your keyboard is Trash, do the following:1. hold down shift2. hold down M. the letter "M" should appear.3. tap Y. the letter "Y" should appear.4. release shift and M5. if Y did not appear in step 3, destroy that keyboard immediately.

if you can't type a common english word in all caps while being a little fast and sloppy with your typing, your keyboard is broken. you should exchange it for one that is not broken

technical shit: this is anti-ghosting. Keyboards without diodes have a matrix problem where holding multiple keys means it becomes impossible to determine what keys are pressed: to avoid incorrect keys being pressed, it just ignores both the incorrect and correct keypresses

the way you solve this is by either:1. being clever with how your matrix works. this technically leaves anti-ghosting issues but you can at least limit how often they happen, and on one key combinations. 2. PUT FUCKING DIODES IN YOUR DESIGN YOU CHEAPASS PUNKS

the thing is, there's several keyboard designs where they are not clever with their matrixes. Here's a fucking hint: modifier keys like ctrl, alt, shift, windows? they will commonly be pressed ALONG WITH letter keys. PUT THEM ON DIFFERENT COLUMNS YOU PUNKS

diodes are about a cent each in bulk.adding them to a keyboard increases the cost by about a dollar. it's required for them to work correctly, but apparently there's a large market for 1$ cheaper but broken keyboards

@foone I'm not sure laptop makers even care about keyboards any more. The whole sub-1mm movement makes most of them difficult to type on even before considering rollover and other niceties. It's been well over a decade since I got something I could enjoy typing on. I'm sure people have forgotten that older Thinkpads (for example) were actively nice to type on. I'm sure part of it is price, but part of it seems to be a certain fruit-named company constantly lowering the bar for what's acceptable.

@fooneI've seen gamer keyboards advertise 6-key rollover. But if you use diodes right, there shouldn't be a hardware limit, and as far as I know, the protocol itself sends key down, key up, which also has no limit. How many diodes does an 8x16 matrix (128 keys) need? And how many fractions of a cent is that in chip area?

@foone The difference between a 30 GBP mechanical keyboard and a 100 GBP mechanical keyboard is, āPrevents me from having debilitating pain,ā unfortunately. Tactile key switches are basically the only reason I am physically capable of doing my job these days.

@foone I had a problem with several keyboards and the DOS game 'The Amazing Spider-Man' because they wouldn't let me press up, left and space at the same time - a combo required to play the game for any length of time.

@foone The Apple II had n-key rollover in 1979, there's no excuse today to not have it.

@foone My desktop keyboard (TrulyErgonomic) has 6-key rollover (not including modifiers); my new laptop (Framework 13) seems to have 3-key rollover; surprisingly, the keyboard cover for my cheap Windows ARM tablet (Hyrican Study Pad One) seems to have 6-key rollover (though this includes modifiers), and the keyboard on GPD Pocket3 is the same.

@foone I didn't know bugs could survive long enough for you to find the exact same one in two keyboards 10 years apart. I mean I'm no insect expert but a decade seems like a long time for such a tiny critter to live. If it really is the same one it must be quite fond of you to stick around so long though! Bug friend!!

@foone is this maybe why I've had three ThinkPads in a row whose keyboards have all gone wrong in the same way? I.e. left CTRL stopped working (and sometimes other keys)?

@foone I have 5 different keyboards in my house and all can do MY, but only one of them have N-Key Rollover. The rest are slightly different in what combination of keys are combined into groups, and thus which keys ghost are different.

@Riedler it can be done but there's no real benefits over just using diodes. It's more expensive, you need more/bigger controllers
