That my mom nags and worries me about random stuff such as today's annoyance "Why do you keep shaking your leg like that?" (sewing machine knee) "that's how people act when they are withdrawing from drugs"My mom is one of those people who talks about "drugs" like there is just one drug and it makes you into a demon/zombie. This is your brain on the local news. I know, I know, I know, that this is just her way of being invested an concerned, but its SO ANNOYING.

I think what really lets it get to me in that in all these years that she has become concerned about unknown things that scare her like drugs she hasn't learned anything new about these terrors. I know it doesn't help that I say things like "nearly everyone is on drugs, caffeine is a drug"I brought a bottle of alcohol removed wine for dinner which is also suspicious apparently. We just have very different ways of understanding the concept of drugs.And I think I'm right.

@futurebird Yeah, my dad's the same way. Some things I'd rather not tell him. Maybe later. But where do you start when people who use drugs are EVIL and everything is completely simple and black and white in his mind?

@futurebird when I was in my twenties and hadn't yet learned "what she doesn't know won't hurt her", I told my Mum that my ex and I sometimes smoked weed because I thought it would establish I was telling the truth when I reassured her I had never touched any other drugs, and I thought it wouldn't be a big deal because my dad had openly talked about smoking weed in college. Reader, It Was A Big Deal. Fast forward a couple of decades and I moved back in with them after a breakup, bringing with me

@futurebird various novel items your average middle class seventy year old was probably unfamiliar with, including an exercise ball and the little white plastic tube to blow it up with in a plastic bag which my Mum found in my room and confronted me with, demanding if said ex who I hadn't even heard from in ten years had given it to me "to do lines with"

@futurebird One of the reasons I think it's so hard to fix anything is that it takes generations to change even simple cultural ideas.My mom still likes to recommend "taking a drive" both as a way to relax and as a type of mini-tourist excursion. She will never get rid of her generations casual reliance on the automobile, and does not understand that I think "taking a drive" for no good reason is emblematic of how Americans are destroying the planet, and I don't find it relaxing in the least.

@futurebird This is my mom exactly. She is a shut in and knows only what she sees on Facebook, TV, and surfing sketchy local news sites. It just feeds her inherent fears and anxieties. The election has her all amped up about "immigrants," despite our own ancestors having been chased out of most every country in Europe and half the United States, recently or not. All her media is fear poison.

@futurebird Strangely my mom is more worried about pot (which is legal where I live, and I don't imbibe anyway) than meth and fentanyl which are rampant where she lives (and most red states for that matter).
