I've recommended @libreoffice as an alternative to Microsoft Office to at least two people over the phone today. #LibreOffice #Microsoft

That sometimes happens!I fully let them know that there are some Microsoft specific features that LibreOffice doesn't have and that they can always buy Microsoft Office later if they need it. I have so many frustrations with Microsoft products that I am actively promoting alternatives. #Microsoft

@Paleface @libreoffice @matthew I haven’t tried it in a while I will confess. Also, agree on Office, it reached peak capability 10 or so years ago and ever since then it’s been a sh!tfest. It’s why they tied it to a subscription service because they knew no one would buy a ”new” version (see also: Adobe Acrobat).Office maintains its vice grip because of Outlook’s hooks into their mail system and all the ERP plugins written for Excel (which Microsoft’s Pajeet coders accidentally broke this month).

@matthew @libreoffice @EvilSandmich This is the way! I have successfully been running my business on open source for almost 6 years. I moved my father who is 74 to linux more than 15 years ago, and he never had any security problems or difficulties using his computer. Truly we are in the times of the linux laptop!

Usually #LinuxMint or Linux Mint #Debian Edition. Any distro with the #Cinnamon desktop, which is what Mint uses, would likely work fine. Linux Mint has the most easy to find documentation, forum posts, et cetera. I recommend Cinnamon for older people, as the desktop environment looks and works similarly to how Windows XP and Windows 7 was, which many people in that demographic have fond memories of.

@h4890 @matthew @libreoffice @EvilSandmich Nice to hear of others using it for business. I have several SMBs that only use #libreoffice with some backup/sync option vs 365. No major lost functionality and minimal learning time by choosing the tabbed interface. I asked each to make a small donation and most did it.

@torparskytt @matthew @libreoffice My father has used opensuse for the past 15 years without any problems at all. A rock solid and very unknown distribution in my opinion. https://www.opensuse.org/#Leap

@matthew @libreoffice @torparskytt My father uses xfce. In my experience, it will take a bit of teaching in the beginning, but once they have tried a couple of times to login, start the web browser, and go to their favourite web site, things fall into place pretty quick.

@trippedup @matthew @libreoffice @EvilSandmich Have you considered offering your office client your own self-hosted backup service? It is easy to build, a nice insurance to sell, and will give you some nice extra cashflow. I have an acquaintance that runs a HW-shop (for HPC and servers) and he does this and gets a 1000 USD or two extra per month out of this type of service.

@matthew @libreoffice @EvilSandmich From my experience, it's only a big issue if the documents in question are "heavily decorated". It's mostly noticeable when opening PowerPoint files in LibreOffice Impress. For basic text documents and spreadsheets, it should be fine.

@h4890 Honestly no. Most of my clients are very small businesses which have specific online services that include everything (contracts, invoices, inventories, etc) except their email and office suite, so almost nothing is local. A couple work exclusively in gsuite or 365 online (no desktop apps, even) because they're byod with their independent contractors. The only one big enough already has a proxmox cluster in HA (ceph ftw) with a dedicated backup server offsite. I do keep configs and some device images for quick redeployment but they're so small... I don't charge much for it since I'm mostly hourly.

@trippedup Ahh, I understand. Yes, then it does not make that much sense.
