Betting & gambling is getting more and more normalized again, almost like sports and betting on sports are two sides of the same coin but they're notSites and apps popping up left and right and more people joining in 😟 There is a reason however why all those gambling companies exist, the house wins ALWAYS at the end of the day and a casino is super profitableIf people made money from (online) casinos they would not exist in the first place! Be smart❤️

@stux You know it's even worse - they allow betting on all sorts of things, from serious ones like the elections to trivial ones like who gets killed in a TV showIt encourages the development of serious addictions that can ruin a life. I don't understand why it ever was legalized 😖

@stux whenever I see a UX job posting for a gambling company like Dice i just cringe. I would have to be really desperate for work to consider applying to one of those. I hope I am never this desperate. The thought of using UX design to manipulate people into losing so much makes me sick.

@stuxAs a teenager, I worked at a convenience store that had a lottery machine.Every single day on closing, the lottery machine was 2k or more in favor of the lottery company.I saw multiple people every day toss $100 into the machine and spend every dollar they won on more lottery until they lost.It was just sad. I think advertising gambling should be illegal. It's extremely predatory.

@stux It's gotten to the point that college players are being harassed because they didn't hit the stats needed for bettors to win their prop bets. @JHein It really is :sad_cat: Sometimes I quickly go via a store that sells almost exclusively tobacco, lottery and some other small items and indeed people in front of me in the line who come for their lottery tickets almost always spend the "winnings" on new tickets while paying extra

@palangu @JHein For a while, one could spend a whole month's salary on the official website of the Dutch lottery that is run at the end by the Dutch govAlmost all lottery bs here in NL is managed and handled by a company of the government, and instead of using it 'responsibly' they go the other way. It's disgusting

@JHein @stux I remember once missing my train, and while I was waiting, a bunch of kids ran into the station, and spent all of their money on Lottery tickets.After the 1st wave, they spent all of their winnings on more tickets and repeated, until they were at 0 and left.Quite an educational experience to be sure. :D

@stux @JHein In Brazil, gambling was an exclusive activity of the state, but recently legislative loopholes have been opened to accommodate online betting companies. The social damage is already conspicuous and accountable.

@stux My question is a bit provocative, of course. In the stock market it depends on what kind of transactions you are going for. Long term investments tend to be more "knowledge based". Short term... Crypto is pure gambling. It's strange that it's not regulated the same way.

@stux I completely lost respect for Gretzky and Jamie Fox when they appeared on gambling ads. They are both filthy rich, did not need to do that, but chose to because you can never be rich enough.

@stux In Colorado the ads for the state-administered lotteries all emphasize that a “portion” of the income from the lotteries goes to support education and the state park system. Sounds nice, but why not just raise taxes on everybody in the state to pay for that? Nope, can’t do that. Nobody will vote for that. (Disclaimer: I buy lottery tickets. I also always vote to raise taxes for education, even though I have no kids.)
