I'm totally going to start #teaPosting again. There are a smattering of posts on the following hashtags:#GongFuCha #teaCulture #puerh #tea But, we could liven things up a bit, I think. And there seem to be people curious about what all of the fuss is about with The Tea.

@harmonia_amanda Yes yes! Please do. This is a tea culture networking post. And I have some things to say about how there are many ways to enjoy tea. Tea is a thread connecting far flung aspects of human history and we can talk about sweet southern iced Lipton, bitter and astringent, tart and cold and fresh. We can talk about the comfort of delicate porcelain and black tea with milk.We can talk about Tea: aged two decades in Hong Kong sipped from a tiny cup in the cool mountains.

@futurebird I can't really afford to do much with tea these days, but I used to really be into sencha. I'm afraid I never quite got the hang of stuff being more subtle and weak though. I have to taste it, and then it tends to be a bit bitter. I have quite a sweet tooth, so even though this is probably an abomination, I tended to add a bit of honey to mine. You're probably not supposed to do that to sencha, but I did, lol.I hope I don't end up with people with torches me after that.

@MolluskGoneBad There are two main kinds of puerh:Green/ShengFermented/ShuFermented puerh tries to mimic the taste of aged sheng by letting the tea ferment in piles. I'm not a huge fan, it's kind of... earthy and funky. Nearly everyone loves a good aged sheng, this is why it's so expensive. The way that one gets around this is by buying young sheng and ... waiting for a decade to drink it. This is part of the "fun."I would say start with samples from a shop like essence of tea.

@MolluskGoneBad When you shop with one of these dealers with good samples the prices are a little "premium" but you are paying for their guidance. You can avoid this to some degree by getting to know your local teahead WHICH EXIST. They tend to hang out at antiques markets where they have little booths and lots of old Chinese cabinets. Try to get an aged sheng of at least 5 years. Every tea is different. Then maybe buy a small pressed cake (but not those single serving ones)

@EricLawton One can just use a letter opener. But part of the fun is having a bunch of tea stuff and making a big deal out of the whole process. Like obviously you need a little dish to "present" the dry tea so everyone can look at it before you brew it right? It's just about making the tea more of an occasion.

@spacegeck @MolluskGoneBad I will never understand shu puerh. And sadly this is what western shops that also sell "herbal" teas tend to foist off on people as "try puerh" no wonder no one likes it. If I want to suck on a shoe I will suck on a shoe.

@EricLawton Don't confuse gong fu cha with the Japanese tea ceremony which is this very specific way of making matcha. It seems similar on the surface with all the ... stuff and fussiness, but every person who cares about puerh makes it in their own way and will talk your ear off about why THAT way is the best one. I have decided that this is the point of it all. Come up with our own way of making tea and do it for other people and bring them over to your "way."

@EricLawton Also, and this is just personal experience. I have found puerh tea people to be the most outgoing and willing to teach new people about what they were doing. Willing to share and invite everyone in. It's just very welcoming ... possibly because people obsessed with tea are desperate for new people to talk about it to. But never mind that! They are nice. And it's like a whole international network of pottery and obscure tea facts nerds waiting to indo-- welcome you!

@Sharksonaplane I think about 2/3s of the regulars at the tea hang out I used to go to were from Taiwan and that's how it tended to go. Everyone would bring their pots and tea and stuff and try to impress everyone else with their brew. I need to get back into that again. It was so fun.

@Sharksonaplane Now and then we'd get really fancy and "go into nature" which for NYC people means going to the botanical gardens and trying not to get caught boiling water with a jetboil behind one of the park benches. But once the cloth as trays were laid out it was very elegant and people would stop and ask questions and get roped in to sitting down for the next round. Then everyone got tea drunk, which sound fake but ... no it is very real.

@futurebird @spacegeck @MolluskGoneBad it's 1am where I am and I now want to go on a rant to defend shu pu-erhs XDHiiiiiii I will be the fediverse's shu pu-erh fan if it needs one!(Though I will admit that there is more variation in quality among shupus than elsewhere and there are also more counterfeiting in shupus than with other teas. There are quite a lot of cakes out there which have not been aged as they are indicated they are, and other cakes where they went through the fermentation process to try to mask the bad quality of leaves. It's more a problem for shupu than for shengpu in my experience. But a good quality shupu??? Oh they hold my heart.)

@futurebird @spacegeck @MolluskGoneBad I will agree that the taste is completely different than shengpu and it's quite funny the process was invented to try to get "aged shengpu taste" faster. It has not achieved that, but it achieved something else, which can also be glorious.
