Is not just that evolution makes sense of the natural world that matters, it is that, without an understanding of evolution, we will be robbed of wonder, unable to fully perceive and experience the the beauty of the natural world. Are lichen surprising and remarkable if one can simply say the bacteria, algae and fungi were just designed all at once to work together in their symbiosis? Without evolutionary theory the interplay and negotiation of ecosystems becomes invisible and trivial.

@futurebirdThis is pretty pro climate change. Humans are animals. All our behavior is normal. All animals go extinct because of evolution. Don't feel bad about anything you do because we're all just animals being animals in Dawn's evolution.

@futurebird It's true. The way nature *actually works* is *way* more interesting, amazing, and beautiful than some dumb religion

@futurebird I've often felt that Christians should take a stronger position that 'intelligent design' is blasphemy. If you look at how, for example, the human eye is designed, it's entirely riddled with design flaws. The retina is not attached at the back at all and so can come loose. The optic nerve is connected right in the middle (rather than at the edges, where it wouldn't cause a blind spot). There's no mechanism for calibrating the lens (and the manufacturing quality on the lens is low enough that this is really important). The optic nerve doesn't have enough bandwidth to carry the full capacity, so there's delta compression, but there's no error correction for this and so you get a load of artefacts as a result. And that's not even getting into some of the, uh, interesting routing of nerves.Claiming that this is the result of a god doing the best that they could is the same as claiming that the god is, quite frankly, a bit useless. You're saying that he's an incompetent deity who bodges things instead of doing good design work.On the other hand, creating a set of initial conditions that gave rise to natural laws that drive evolution to create them is pretty impressive.

@futurebird Lichens are surprising and remarkable, and systems of understanding them (and all things) that bring us into closer, respectful relationship with them are good. Humans create (have created, will create) all kinds of systems for this purpose... I don't think we need to say that there can be only one. --But yes, I like how evolutionary biology lets us understand lichens.

@futurebird If time is only linear to our consciousness, but actually more complex than a straight line from past to present to future, then evolution can be considered to be 'intelligent design', in "exploded" view.

@futurebird @gregeganSF I'm not sure I agree. I think it would be marvelous if there were a supernatural being of immense power who designed the universe and created everything in it, and who was nevertheless morally concerned with humans. And certainly many people do see it this way! We don't, but I think not because it wouldn't be amazing if it were true, but because we believe it isn't.

@futurebird I really think it would help a lot if people could understand and accept that it's not evolution that they want to deny, but the fact that humans were a product of evolution.Since "evolution" just means "things change over time and changes that survive better will become more proliferate than the ones that don't," denying it is basically denying logic and reason.

@futurebird >[...] if one can simply say the bacteria, algae and fungi were just designed all at once to work together in their symbiosis?surely, if designed, it would've been a single part to reduce costs and shorten the BOM...

@david_chisnall I agree. It's an insult to not do your best to really understand the natural world if there by the grace of God you go, if you have this one chance to see and interact and learn.

@futurebird @david_chisnallThis is an argument promulgated by people who say that diseases and natural catastrophes are punishments from god that somehow we learn to overcome. It is not a thinking argument. It is a test of loyalty: “if you repeat this bullshit, you’re on our team.”

@futurebird I have always wondered how people could claim that science destroys wonder. In my personal experience it has always been the other way around. The more I learned about the details, the complex relationships, the fragility of things, the more I appreciated them, the more they fulfilled me with awe and a deep sense of harmony and order. So many people walk trough this world with their eyes closed not seeing its beauty. I would have to despair w/o exploring its wonders.
